American flag raising, concert and patriotic address, June 14

The historic 112-year-old Allentown Flag Day Association will have a flag raising noon June 14 at Allentown City Hall Plaza (rain or shine) with the Allentown Police Department’s Honor Guard and the Air Force Junior ROTC of Louis E. Dieruff High School participating.

This will be followed 7 p.m. by a patriotic concert by the Great Allentown Band in Allentown’s West Park at 16th and Turner streets. The concert rain site is in the auditorium of William Allen High School.

At the concert, bugler Bob Sedlick Jr. will call for the presentation of colors by the Air Force Junior ROTC, under the direction of Aerospace Instructor Maj. Timothy Page, USAF.

Allentown Band, under the direction of Conductor Ron Demkee, will present John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever;” a tribute to all veterans during the “Armed Forces Salute.”

Soprano soloist Evelyn Stewart will lead “The Star-Spangled Banner” and enhance the traditional favorites of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “God Bless America” among other patriotic tunes.

The evening’s address will be presented by Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas Judge Melissa T. Pavlack.

Pavlack is a graduate of Parkland High School and Muhlenberg College.

She received her Doctor of Law degree from Widener University School of Law and was admitted to the Bar of the Pennsylvania Courts in 1989.

Elected in 2017, Pavlack has been an active member of the Family Law Sections of the Pennsylvania and Lehigh County Bar Associations.

The three winners of the Flag Day Association’s annual essay contest, held in all Allentown middle schools on the role of Old Glory in their lives, will present their essays.

The events are free and the public is invited to attend. A free will offering will be taken during the concert to continue the programs of the Allentown Flag Day Association, the oldest incorporated Flag Day Association in the United States, founded in 1907 by Allentown resident Joe Hart.
