The farmers market is now open 4-7 p.m. every Thursday through October except Aug. 22. The market features local family farmers providing fruits, vegetables, meat products, eggs, baked goods, plants and more. Parking is available at the park parking lot and along North Walnut Street.
With warmer temperatures come the many outside events held from spring through fall at Macungie Memorial Park. Volunteers are needed to help with these events. If you are able to donate some time, call 610-966-4289 or email macungiepark@gmail.com.
Grace Lutheran Church will host a free community meal 5-7 p.m. June 14. The church is located at 28 W.Main St.
The 40th annual antique truck show will be held June 14-15 at Macungie Memorial Park. The event will host over 600 antique trucks and feature “D” trucks. There will be a flea market, truck corral, crafters and food. For more information, go to www.antiquetruckclubofamerica.org.
The Lower Lehigh Lions will hold a chicken barbecue sale with pickup 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15 at the Trexlertown Mall near the health center. Tickets can be purchased from any Lower Lehigh Lions member or by contacting Pete at 484-431-0688 or pelusopa@ptd.net.
Grace Lutheran Church will hold a strawberry festival and community fair 4-7 p.m. June 22. There will be food, children’s games, a basket raffle and cake walks.
Out of Our Minds Art Studio will hold the first annual chalk the walk 9 a.m. to noon June 22 at the Macungie Fire Company. Artists ages six years through adult are invited to register for one of a limited number of sidewalk blocks and showcase their chalk art skills. Cash prizes will be awarded. The rain date is June 23. There will be an Old Fashioned Fourth of July Picnic starting 10 a.m. July 4 at Macungie Memorial Park. The bicycle/wagon parade begins 10 a.m. There will be a duck race in the creek 11 a.m. The Macungie Band will perform 11:30 a.m. in the bandshell. There will also be games and contests for children as well as the annual Bear Swamp Derby. Bring your own matchbox type car or purchase one at the picnic. The fire department and ambulance corps will have equipment on display. Macungie Pool will be hosting events outside the pool 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. No reservations are needed to picnic on the grounds but pavilions must be rented in advance. Basketball, baseball and volleyball fields are available but participants must bring their own equipment. For more information, contact hornerd2@gmail.com.
Macungie Pool is open noon to 8 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends through Aug. 25. On weekdays there is Toddler Time 11 a.m. to noon. On Mondays, there is a story time 10:30-11 a.m. There will be a cake walk and games for the Fourth of July. Aqua aerobics are offered 6-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday for season pass holders. Swim lessons are available. The pool will close 5 p.m. June 17 and 24 and July 8 and 11 for swim meets. For information, call 610-966-5757.

The Macungie Park Board of Directors meeting will be held downstairs 7 p.m. June 25. The public is welcome.

Our daughter is currently living in San Francisco. Several of her college friends came to visit her and she organized some sightseeing tours for them. As she told me later, she looked up the hours for Alcatraz and the best times for visiting. The recommendation was to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. So she woke up all her friends early and told them they had to get moving so they could avoid the crowds. Then she realized: Oh my gosh, I sound just like my mother!
