Symphony Sounds: The Elysium Quartet, which includes three members of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra (ASO), performs, 7:30 p.m. May 31 in the “Arts at St. John’s” series, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 S. Fifth St., Allentown. The program is free and open to the public, with free-will donations accepted. Performing are: Julie Bougher, violin, ASO; James Finegan, violin, ASO; Steve Heitlinger, viola, ASO, and Andrea Weber, cello. The program is: Haydn, “String Quartet in E flat major (The Joke)”; Golijov, “Tenebrae,” and Mendelssohn, “String Quartet No. 1.” The Elysium Quartet members have been playing together since 2008 when they met as students at Temple University. The ensemble’s first major performance was at the Kimmel Center for the Performance Arts, Philadelphia, before a concert given by Itzhak Perlman. They have performed with Andrea Bocelli, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Michael Bublé, Darlene Love, Steve Van Zandt, Chris Thile, Brandi Carlisle, “Celtic Women,” Jim Brickman, Peter Cetera, San Fermin, Ronnie Spector, Procul Harem, Celtic Thunder and Vanessa Williams.

Hot Jazz in Hellertown: Jerry Rife and his Rhythm Kings perform, 2 p.m. June 2, in the Pennsylvania Jazz Society concert, Dewey Banquet Hall, 502 Durham St., Hellertown. Rife, who plays clarinet, performed in his first version of the Rhythm Kings while a student at Michigan State University. The latest lineup includes Pat Mercuri, banjo and guitar; Clint Sharman, trombone; Danny Tobias, trumpet; Gary Cattley, bass and tuba, and Sean Dixon, drums.
