Zephs compete at state track meet

Whitehall’s track and field season ended at Shippensburg last Saturday with some fine performances from all their PIAA participants.

The AAA field events were held on day two, and Lucas Souders was among those athletes competing. He was competing in the javelin and uncorked a 173-5 toss that landed him just out of the top-10 finishers. He wound up 11th among the 28 competitors.

The junior will have one more year to try and make it among the top-eight in the state.

In the 100 meter dash, Chad Hussett was looking to get back to the podium as well. He finished second at districts and was hopeful to repeat or better his time of 11.08. The senior sprinter ran another strong race, finishing eighth in his heat on Friday. He crossed the line in 11:33, but his mark didn’t qualify for the finals the following day.

He’ll now continue his track career at East Stroudsburg University next fall.

The girls 4x100 team, owners of gold at the EPC Track and Field Championships and silver at the District XI Championships, were looking to ride that medal wave into a place on the podium at states. The team of Aspen Schache, Helen Davis, Aliyah Barkley and Kate Bonshak who ran 49.60 at the D-11 finals. At Shippensburg, that foursome teamed up for a 50.73 in the preliminaries, but that mark didn’t advance them into the finals.

The 4x100 team should also be in good shape next season as 3/4 of the team returns. They’ll have Schache, Barkley and Bonshak back, and that will make them a force to reckon with in the relay once again. Davis ends her track career having helped established the school record in the 4x100 in last year’s preliminaries during the PIAA meet. That mark stands at 48.80 set by Davis, Monica Manu, Bonshak and Amanda Crooks.

The two-day meet at Seth Grove Stadium puts a bow on another successful track and field season for the Zephyrs.

Chad Hussett runs in the 100 meter race during the state track and field meet.
