Holben caps career at state meet

With all but one meet of a stellar high school career behind her, Erica Holben hoped to have some of her best high jumps last Friday at the PIAA Class 2A Championship Meet at Shippensburg University.

Holben cleared 4 feet, 8 inches for 24th place in the high jump. While she knows she could have gotten higher, she was also happy to culminate her high school career at the state championship meet competing against the best athletes from all over Pennsylvania.

“I think it was a successful way to end my senior season,” she said. “I would have liked to have done better, but I came out and had fun today so that’s all you can ask for.”

Holben finished a career that included Six top-five finishes in the Colonial League Championships and six top-five finishes at district meets.

She took second place in three events (long jump, triple jump and high jump) at the district meet two weeks ago despite battling injuries all season.

Over the past three years she’s finished second, third and third, respectively, in the Colonial League high jump.

Her career-best high jump is 5-3, although injuries prevented her from hitting that during her senior season.

Last week was the last track meet of her career as the three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball, track) plans to attend Temple University and focus on academics.

She was pleased to reach the state meet this year for the first time in her career, a fitting way to end a great career.

“It was very exciting,” she said. “It was a good atmosphere. It’s just like another big meet, like districts and leagues but with more people.”
