The year at Freedom HS (FHS) is coming to a close, as underclassmen have only 17 full instructional days remaining. That number is even lower for seniors as they attempt to hold off “senioritis.” Still, there are plenty of activities to keep FHS students occupied throughout the final weeks of the second semester.

Last month, the Freedom High School Theatre Company (FHSTC) performed its annual spring musical. The group’s rendition of “Anything Goes” was well-received, and several actors will surely be candidates for the upcoming Freddy Awards. The Freddy nominations will be announced May 9. The ceremony will be held May 23 at the State Theatre in Easton.

While FHSTC students worked tirelessly to perfect the school’s spring musical, other art and music students also put on high-quality performances. Freedom’s annual art show, a display of student-created drawings, paintings, and sculptures, was held April 25.

The Patriot Band and the orchestra are two more gifted musical groups that excite audiences every year. The band concert will take place May 14, while the orchestra concert, held April 26, was the final performance for many senior members.

“I feel proud of all we’ve achieved, and I’ve felt especially proud of all the improvement I’ve made over the last four years. [Graduating and moving on] is a bittersweet feeling,” said Riley Sweitzer, a senior and the vice president of Freedom’s orchestra.

Those watching such outstanding arts and musical performances from the audience will soon have their own time to shine. Freedom’s prom, themed “A Night in The City,” is scheduled for May 17 from 6-10 p.m. at SteelStacks. A committee of Class of 2020 officers took charge of planning the prom.

“Throughout year, we’ve been reliant on input from juniors. Given some of the feedback we received, we chose [‘A Night in the City’] as a way to stay true to all of them,” said Alfredo Suarez, Class of 2020 president.

Of course, it would not be a Freedom update without mentioning the tremendous success of the Patriots’ athletes this year. Last week, several senior athletes officially committed to continue their careers in college at the annual Signing Day. Still, these gifted young players must focus on the spring season.

All of the Freedom sports teams have respectable records at the beginning of May, but one sport stands out. As of May 2, the boys volleyball team had a 12-2 record, which is good enough for the No. 2 seed in the EPC. What was once a young team is now a powerhouse of juniors and seniors with excellent chemistry.

As the school session draws to a close, Freedom students continue to fight those end-of-the-year blues. Check back next year for another update; but for now, go Pates!
