MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Macungie Police Department Sgt. Travis Kocher attended the May 20 Macungie Borough Council meeting, providing a report on police activity during the months of March and April.

Kocher said crimes are classified as Part I and Part II. Part I includes homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft and arson. Part II includes all other offenses. There were no Part I offenses.

Kocher said there were 229 incidents dispatched in March and 214 dispatched in April. Year-to-date dispatches are 788.

Domestic disturbances, traffic accidents, driving while under the influence, traffic citations, parking tickets and arrests are the usual types of crime.

Kocher said 25 traffic citations were issued in March. There were seven domestic disturbances in April.

Discussion arose about the lack of a police chief. Currently, Kocher provides everything the police department needs as well as providing services to the community. Council voted on pursuing the possibility of having a police chief.

In other business, traffic studies have been completed on South Chestnut Street and West Main Steet. A study was also done on South Church Street which showed an average speed of 28 mph. It was said this could be due to the fact motorists are aware of the study.

Two proclamations were issued by borough council at the meeeting.

Harry Buchin, born in Emmaus in 1922, has been a resident of the area all of his life. He spent three years in the Army where he served in Europe and earned a Bronze Star Medal, a European-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with three bronze stars), the Pacific Theater Campaign medal and others. Buchin resided in Macungie where he returned to Mack trucks and also was a notary and at one time a justice of the peace. He also owned Buchin’s Hardware.

Michael and Laura McCready were honored for their caring and maintenance of Kalmbach Park in the way the estate of Kalmbach requested. Frederick Kalmbach, from Germany and born in 1879, felt deeply privileged to experience the freedoms and cultural diversity of America. He bequeathed his 20-acre homestead as a place to gather to promote education and appreciate American freedoms. Macungie Borough Council extended their gratitude for the past 20 years for Laura and Michael McCready’s distinguished service. A proclamation was issued for their care of community, teachings, education, notable contributions, guidance and love for their fellow man throughout the years.

The borough is working on plans for the Macungie Institute, police department, borough offices and fire department offices.

A correction was noted from the last council meeting. Residents are not responsible for maintaining the trees to be planted on Main Street.
