Emmaus Flag Day Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary June 14. The program, coordinated by The Woman’s Club of Emmaus, will be held 6 p.m. in Emmaus Community Park.

The current fifth and eighth grade students who are selected as winners of the Flag Day writing contest will present their poems and essays. The focus of their writing is “What the American Flag means to me.”

The program also includes the Emmaus Chorale, Emmaus veterans, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Also winners in the poetry and essay writing contests from the 1970s through the 1990s have been invited to read their winning essays and poems.

The Rev. Brian Dixon will serve as chaplain. Emmaus Police Patrolman Adam Polster, an Emmaus High School graduate, will be the speaker. Polster is a U.S. Marine combat veteran who completed multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and is the recipient of two Purple Heart awards. For information, visit flagdayemmaus50@ptd.net.

The Emmaus Recreation and Entertainment Commission will hold a 40th anniversary party 2 to 8 p.m. June 2 at Emmaus Community Park. The Scott Marshall and Marshall’s Highway band will be on the pavilion stage the entire day. Many guest musicians will join the band for hours of fun and great music.

There will be a car cruise during the event. The public is invited to join the cruise with their hot rod, antique or muscle car (visit emmausrec@gmail.com for information on joining the cruise). The event will feature food trucks, vendors and community groups as well. There will be a children’s area with games, crafts and a huge inflatable obstacle course.

The schedule for June for concerts 6 to 8 p.m. Sundays in the Sam Landis Arts Pavilion is June 9: Main Street Cruisers; June 16: No concert on Father’s Day: June 23: Tommy Zito (5 to 8 p.m.); June 30: James Supra Blues Band with Sarah Ayers.

Bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy a movie under the stars at community park June 21. The feature will be “Lego Movie 2.” Free Zumba is held 9 to 10 a.m. in the Community Park Arts Pavilion every Saturday (donations for instructors are welcomed).

The Emmaus Community Park pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. June 1, 2, 8 and 9. The pool will open daily for the summer season noon to 8 p.m. beginning June 14.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. June 17 in council chambers at borough hall, 19 S. 4th St.

Emmaus will hold a community yard sale 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 1. The rain date is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2. Permits or fees are not required.

The Emmaus Senior Citizens group will meet 1 p.m. June 7 at St. Matthew’s E.C. Church, Fifth and Ridge streets. Musician Fred Arnold will entertain. All local senior citizens are welcome. The Emmaus Garden Club meets noon June 4 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. 2nd St. Frank Licata, master beekeeper, will present a program on “Beekeeping in America: Promoting the Medical and Historical Aspects of Keeping Bees.” Honey and products made with honey, such as soaps and lotions, will be available for sale. The Emmaus Public Library is gearing up for summer reading clubs. Participants can start signing up for children’s, teens’ and adult clubs 10 a.m. June 10 and start earning incentives while tracking your reading through Aug. 10. Then join the staff for the Summer Reading kickoff party on the library’s lawn, 11 E. Main St., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15. The event includes DJ Strick James playing the best tunes, carnival games with prizes, a make-it craft sponsored by Home Depot, a Cool Treats ice-cream truck, summer reading sign-ups and more. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” The library is gearing up for a rocket full of fun, with Tuesday morning story times and Wednesday morning movies all summer long, plus many more fun and free events. Plan ahead: Enjoy a day of fun and fellowship Sept. 21 when the Friends of the Emmaus Public Library hosts a bus trip to Winterthur Museum. The trip features “Costuming the Crown,” a special exhibit of costumes designed for the Netflix drama, “The Crown.” There is a cost. The Emmaus Historical Society will hold its annual member picnic 5:30 p.m. June 19 at Emmaus Community Park Moser Pavilion. Non-member guests are welcome by paying 2019 dues. New displays and exhibits at the Emmaus Historical Society museum, 218 Main St., feature Vintage Americana, a tribute to all Emmaus High School alumni who graduated in years ending with “9“ and the 1824 room is now transformed into the Celebrate the Celebrations room where all past Emaus/Emmaus anniversaries are remembered. The 13th annual veterans bricks installation ceremony will be held 1 p.m. May 26 at the Emmaus Remembrance Garden.

The program includes 16 honorees, keynote speaker Ret. Sr. Master Sgt. Chris Anthony and taps and rifle salute by the Emmaus Veterans Committee honor guard. The Emmaus Rotary Club is hosting its second motorcycle poker run to benefit local veterans June 29. The proceeds from the event are given to Tails of Valor, a nonprofit that raises and trains dogs to live with and help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress. You may notice youngsters visiting the borough’s historical sites June 5, 6 and 7. The students are taking part in the Heritage Alliance Education project coordinated with the schools as a way to bring history alive to the students and help them appreciate the history in their community.
