Cedar Crest College

Ashley Ross, of Whitehall, was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society at Cedar Crest College. An induction ceremony was held April 11 in the Tompkins College Center on campus. To be eligible, students must meet certain academic requirements. This semester, 24 Cedar Crest College students were eligible for induction into Delta Pi, the local chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda. The goal of the organization is to recognize the achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Alpha Sigma Lambda is the only chapter-based honor society for nontraditional students. The group aims to motivate students to achieve academic and leadership excellence while creating a network of outstanding students and faculty.

Located in Allentown, Cedar Crest College was selected as a “Top Regional College” and a “Best Value” in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings 2012-19 and a “Best College for Veterans” in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. In addition, the college was recognized as a 2018-19 College of Distinction, and the School of Adult and Graduate Education was ranked a Top 25 school for nontraditional students by Best College Reviews in 2017. Cedar Crest was ranked by College Choice as the No. 12 best women’s college in 2016. Founded in 1867, Cedar Crest currently enrolls approximately 1,700 students - full-time, part-time and graduate - in more than 50 fields of study.

Kutztown University

Jacquelyn Garner, of Catasauqua, was one out of 21 Kutztown University students to be inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education at its induction ceremony April 10. To be inducted, KU education majors must have a 3.5 grade-point average. Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education was founded in 1911 to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. For over a century, the society has consistently grown, starting with a local chapter to become the international organization it is today, with an initiated membership that exceeds 1.2 million.

Bloomsburg University

Kalie Chapman, of Bath, and Hannah Geczi and Abbygail Hill, both of Coplay, were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at Bloomsburg University.

These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society, one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

Kutztown University

Evangelia Hiotis, of Coplay, was one out of 19 Kutztown University students to be inducted into the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology at its induction ceremony April 13.

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society for psychology majors, with chapters around the globe. The KU Chapter of Psi Chi holds biweekly meetings and plans other events for its members and other psychology students. Anyone is welcome to attend the meetings, where topics typically center around psychological research and graduate school. University of Scranton

Theresa Anne Koch, a neuroscience major from Whitehall, was among the University of Scranton students inducted into Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national honorary chemical society.

The honor society accepts students with 24 credits in chemistry and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The university’s chapter of the honor society was established in 1975.

Kutztown University

Shannon Shafnisky, of Whitehall, was among 16 students inducted into the Mu Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society at Kutztown University April 16.

Admission to Phi Alpha Theta is an outstanding achievement based on exceptional academic accomplishment.

Phi Alpha Theta was established in 1921 at the University of Arkansas. The society currently has over 900 chapters and 350,000 members. KU’s Mu Xi Chapter was established in 1967. Among Mu Xi’s charter members were Esther M. Willits, Anthony J. Mazzaferri, Gordon Goldberg and James Collier, who have all gone on to become history professors at Kutztown University.

Bob Jones University

Sarah Worsham, a senior elementary education major from Walnutport, was among approximately 540 Bob Jones University students named to the spring 2019 president’s list.

The president’s list recognizes students who earn a 3.75 or higher GPA for the semester.

Kutztown University

Rebecca Guillen, of Catasauqua, was inducted into the Sigma Delta Pi National Hispanic Honor Society at its induction ceremony April 29.

Sigma Delta Pi is the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities. It is not only the largest foreign language honor society in existence, it is among the elite as attested by its membership since 1966 in the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.

Membership is granted only to those who attain high academic achievement in the study of the Spanish language, the literature and culture of Hispanic nations and other college-level subjects. Specifically, students must have completed three years of study of college-level Spanish or the equivalent thereof, including at least three semester hours of a course in Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization at the junior level. The student must have a minimal GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale in all Spanish courses taken and rank in the upper 35 percent of his or her class.

Campbellsville University

Akhilesh Kalaru, of Whitehall, graduated with Master of Science in information technology management from Campbellsville University during commencement ceremonies May 3 and 4.

There were 2,011 students receiving master’s degrees, 255 receiving bachelor degrees and 12 being awarded associate degrees.

Campbellsville University is a Kentucky-based Christian university with more than 12,000 students offering over 90 programs of study including Ph.D., master, baccalaureate, associate, pre-professional and certification programs. Visit campbellsville.edu.

Kutztown University

Quinn Bachman, of Catasauqua, was inducted into the Alpha Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, April 30.

Alpha Kappa Delta is a nonsecret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated “to investigate humanity for the purpose of service.”

Membership is open to undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty members from active chapters who meet the minimum standards. Currently, there are more than 115,000 members in Alpha Kappa Delta and more than 650 chapters.
