Allentown Central Catholic High School’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” received eight nominations for the 2019 Freddy Awards, including outstanding choreography and outstanding overall production by a smaller school.

The ACCHS Science Olympiad Team competed at the Science Olympiad State Competition at Juniata College April 27. Seniors Sydni Ernst and Natasha Kuklis placed third in “Write It, Do It.”

The Side-by-Side Band and Chorus Concert was held April 27 in Masson Auditorium. The performance featured both high school and feeder school musicians, who spent the day preparing for the nighttime concert. Winners of the ACCHS Music Competition were also announced. They included: Seventh-Eighth Grade Vocal: Sofia Frey, Abigail Zellner, Nicole Hoang; Fourth-Sixth Grade Vocal: Liliana Scholz, Madeline Janis, Holly Binder; Seventh-Eighth Grade Woodwind/Brass: Samantha Meskill, Abigail Zellner, Kaysiana Yeager; Fourth-Sixth Grade Woodwind/Brass: Zaylan Gibson, Bianca Jauregui, Sophia Freemont; Seventh-Eighth Grade Piano/String/Percussion: Max Peterson, Elize Jauregui, Elizabeth Daley and Fourth-Sixth Grade Piano/String/Percussion: Holly Binder, Liliana Scholz, Hanna Cavanagh.

The ecology club performed a service project April 28 in conjunction with the City of Allentown in recognition of Arbor Day. The club checked on over 100 tree seedlings planted last year along Trout Creek in Allentown. Their actions will help ensure the trees grow successfully.

The 21st Kairos Retreat was held April 30 to May 3 at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Wernersville. The four-day retreat is offered to ACCHS seniors and focuses on one’s relationship with God, others and oneself. Kairos XXI retreat leaders included Carlos Cruz-Quezada, Jess Davis, Natasha Kuklis, Emilia Schenkel, Asa Michener, Maddy Rodgers and Yan Tavarez.

The mock trial team participated in Law Day at the Allentown Federal Courthouse May 1. U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Leeson Jr., U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry S. Perkin and retired U.S. District Judge Edward N. Cahn made their courtrooms available to the students, presided over their arguments and answered questions about the legal system. Team members included Noelle Boucher, Morgan Dietz, Dylan Ferareza, Anahbell Gonzalez, Anna Haddad, Jane Kamioner, Jay Khoury and Evan Renner.

The freshman honors biology classes traveled to Massachusetts May 3 to 5 for a whale-watching and sightseeing trip. The students visited the Boston Museum of Science, Quincy Market, Provincetown, the New England Aquarium, Cape Cod and the Massachusetts Audubon Salt Marsh Walk.

The 2019 District 2 Academic Bowl was held at ACCHS May 5. Many of Central’s feeder schools competed in the event. St. Michael the Archangel won the competition, with Good Shepherd coming in second and St. Thomas More finishing third. Other competitors included Sacred Heart, St. Ann and St. Joseph the Worker.

Freshman orientation was held in Rockne Hall May 6 to welcome the incoming Class of 2023. The night featured representatives from Central’s clubs and sports teams and it was a great opportunity for the students to bond with their classmates before beginning the 2019-2020 school year. The Vikette lacrosse team celebrated senior night May 3 at Cedar Crest College. Seniors included Mary Ballas, Sophie Keba, Emily Kidd, Rhyan Joyce, Kate Musselman, Caitlin Noone, Meg Patt and Kiki Wang.

The Viking tennis team competed in the District XI Boys Doubles Match May 6. Two teams, consisting of Dylan Alvarez/Johnson Zhou and Ian Arnold/Ben Carbonetto, advanced to the quarterfinals. The Vikings also finished second in the District XI Championships May 2, falling to Moravian Academy.

The Spring Sports Awards and Mass were held May 7 in Rockne Hall. Athletes from baseball, Viking tennis, lacrosse, softball and track and field were recognized. The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Scholar Athlete nominees and MVPs for each sport were also announced. EPC Scholar Athlete nominees included Grace Barr (lacrosse), Michael Fleck (track and field), Natasha Kuklis (track and field), Josh LaRock (baseball), Abbey Marx (softball), Joseph Pasquale (lacrosse), Julia Santos (cheerleading) and Johnson Zhou (tennis). MVPs were Vincent Bet (track and field), Dorah Ganchoso (student trainer), Abby Lienhard (track and field), Abbey Marx (softball), Dominic Miller (baseball), Kate Musselman (lacrosse) and Cameron Patridge (tennis). Seniors Jess Davis and Justin Pasquale were named ACCHS Athletes of the Year.

The softball team celebrated senior night May 7 at Patriot’s Park in Allentown. Seniors honored include Abbey Marx, Brittany Regan and Gracia Rother.

Senior Viking baseball player Josh LaRock has been named the EPC Scholar Athlete for baseball. Winners are selected by the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference based on academic and athletic achievement and extracurricular and community activities. LaRock will be recognized at a luncheon May 28 at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn.
