UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN

A free informational program on the spotted lanternfly, Stop the Invader, will be held 7-8 p.m. May 8, at the Lower Milford Township building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road, Coopersburg. This helpful program will be presented by the Lehigh County Conservation District.

Upper Milford Township is offering residents a fee-based roadside yard waste collection program as a supplement to the township’s yard waste drop-off site program. The spring collection dates will be May 6-10. Residents desiring to use the roadside pickup service will be required to purchase a yard waste pickup sticker for each container or bundle to be picked up at a cost of $1 each and also comply with the procedures detailed on the township website.

The Upper Milford Historical Society meets May 30 in the Upper Milford Township building. Refreshments are served and everyone is welcome. For information, call 610-966-4376.

The May program will feature Herb Kauffman talking about the music that got us through World War II. Kauffman brings his own record player and will discuss the patriotic music, sentimental songs, big bands and comic melodies that are woven into the fabric of American culture, including Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters.

On Memorial Day weekend, St. Peter’s Union Church invites the community to join church members to honor our veterans. On Sunday morning, May 26, weather permitting, after the regular 9 a.m. worship service, the congregation will proceed from the church to a grave in the church cemetery, where a brief service will be conducted in remembrance of all who have served our country in the armed forces.

Celebrate Mother’s Day at St. Peter’s with a ham dinner 5-7 p.m. May 11. The dinner includes ham with all the trimmings, mashed red skin potatoes, gravy, carrots, salad, bread/rolls and dessert. The Ladies Auxiliary of Citizens Fire Company of Vera Cruz usually meets 7:30 p.m. May 28 at the Vera Cruz Fire Department Social Hall. They’re always looking for new members. The ladies help support the department by lending a hand in fundraising and other support when needed.

They also hold various fundraisers throughout the year, including pizza sales, shoo-fly pie sales, a picnic to honor emergency responders and assist the firefighters with fire prevention activities. For more information on fundraisers or how to join the auxiliary, email ladiesaux@vcfd28.com.

The Western District Fire Company on Route 100 serves breakfast the first Sunday of the month, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In June, the breakfast is June 2. For information on the breakfasts, call the fire company at 610-966-3541 or Carol Shade at 610-966-3902.

The Upper Milford Fire Company’s ladies auxiliary meets 7 p.m. June 3. New members are always welcome.

Vera Cruz senior citizens meet 1 p.m. May 16 at the Vera Cruz Fire Company. All are welcome.

Lower Milford Township supervisors will meet 6:30 p.m. May 16.

Other Lower Milford meetings are as follows; historical commission, 7:30 p.m. May 14; planning commission, 6:30 p.m. May 6; zoning hearing board, 7 p.m. May 22.

Upper Milford supervisors will meet May 16. As usual, there is a workshop meeting 7 p.m. followed by the regular meeting 7:30 p.m.

The recreation commission meets 7:30 p.m. May 20. The Joint Environmental Advisory Council will not meet in May.

The open space committee meets 7:30 p.m. May 8, only if it is required to conduct business. Check with the township office to find out if it will meet this month. The emergency services committee meets 7 p.m. May 15, also only if required to conduct business.
