Catasauqua head track coach Kyle Rusnock watched his boys’ and girls’ teams grew individually and also as unit during the regular season.

Now, Rusnock is optimistic both teams and ready for the next step.

The Roughie units competed in the Colonial League championships Tuesdays and Wednesday, and then hope to have some of them advance to the district meet the following week. Rusnock has been impressed with the steadying force of the senior leadership coupled with the budding growth of the underclassmen.

“Our seniors have been leaders all season for us and they have done a great job,” he said. “We also have a good young of younger kids who really have gotten better as the season has moved along.

“We believe we have a good foundation for the future, and we expect a number of older and younger kids make some noise in the next couple of weeks.”

Rusnock is looking to senior Trinity Kern to extend her consistent season in the 300 hurdles and fellow senior Jaekwan Moodie to continue his success in the long jump. Moodie finished third in the long jump at the league meet on Monday.

Fellow senior Wilquon Clemons has been a steady force in sprints and junior Montana Muller also should be a contender in the pole vault.

“All of them have the chance to do well,” he said. “They all have put up some good marks, and they seem to be peaking at the right time.”

Rusnock also sees senior Taylor Richards (discus), and juniors Tory Simmons (javelin) and Shaziya Roberts (javelin) should also be in the mix. Simmons finished fourth in javelin at the league meet Monday.

“Taylor (Richards) battled through a shoulder injury, but she has been coming around at the right time,” added Rusnock. “Both (Simmons and Roberts) have been improving in the javelin.”

Sophomore Lexi Rushatz, who went to states in cross country, will be a contender in the 400, 800, 1,600, and 3,200. Her primary focus will be in the 1,600.

“She has a real shot,” offered Rusnock about Rushatz. “Her best chance probably will be in the mile, but she will run all four events. She really has been running well and lowering her times.”

During the regular season, the Roughies’ boys’ squad picked up a win, while the girls’ team went winless.

In spite of their lack of team success, it is all about developing the program.

“We faced some pretty tough competition and we went against a number of 3A or larger schools,” said Rusnock. “Our numbers have been increasing and there is a good chemistry with the program.

“We’ll be looking for some good performances at leagues and districts, and we know we have a bright future.”
