Two Salisbury players competed in the District 11 singles Class 2A tennis tournament last week.

The Falcons’ No. 1 singles player Dylan Weber won his first match at the tournament, while Salisbury’s No. 2 singles players Chris Marinos face the tournament’s top seed and lost in the first round.

Weber came into the event unseeded. Only the top eight players in the 32-payer field are seeded.

Weber beat unseeded Raymond O’Neil of Jim Thorpe 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before falling to No. 3 seed Michael Swope (Palisades) in the second round, 6-0, 6-3.

A junior, Weber hopes playing in this year’s tournament helps him prepare for his senior season.

“Mostly experience,” Weber said when asked about his goals for the event. “Looking to come back next year better and ready to win. Moving forward I just want to keep playing all the way up until next year.”

Marinos, a sophomore whose cousins Mason Groff and John Yurconic were successful players at Salisbury, was also playing in his first district tournament.

He took on No. 2 seed Robbie Shaff (Moravian Academy) and fell 6-0, 6-0.

“I just wanted to go out and try my best,” said Marinos. “I knew he was really good going in. As the match went on I knew what I needed to do or was trying to do.”

Both Salisbury players look forward to coming back next season.

“It’s really good for learning,” Marinos said of this year’s tournament. “I have to get better. Playing better opponents is what’s going to make that happen. It was a good experience all around.

“I’m really excited. There’s more to come. There’s two more years.”

Shaff went on to lose in the finals to this year’s champ, Tej Laliwala of Saucon Valley. The final score was 6-1, 6-3.

In Class 3A, Emmaus sophomore Sean Jaeger won his second straight district title, beating Nazareth’s Gabe Knowles 6-0, 6-1.

Salisbury did not qualify for this week’s District 11 team tournament, but at least two Salisbury doubles teams are expected to compete in next week’s doubles tournament.
