The Digital Aces at Salisbury Middle School entered the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” contest creating a video highlighting B. Braun Medical, Allentown.

The student team consisted of Laurans Trinh, Aloya Thompson, Skylyn Mason, Ethan Carag and Billy Korn.

The group was tasked with creating a video spotlighting a manufacturing business in Pennsylvania showing the importance of manufacturing.

The students first were given a tour of B. Braun Medical where they met manufacturing professionals and learned more about the business.

B. Braun Medical makes over 3,000 medical devices that save lives worldwide.

The students returned a second time to film various professionals and spotlight the manufacturing, quality control and production aspects of the business.

Sitting with The Press recently, the team of students said it was a great experience to participate in the contest and spotlight B. Braun Medical. When visiting B. Braun Medical, the students had to wear clean suits which they thought was pretty cool.

Billy, who took on the role of editor, learned how to create a professional video no more than 2 1/2 minutes in length. That meant taking all of the footage from the visit and turning it into the compacted video.

“I learned how to use a GoPro,” Laurans said. “I also learned how to storyboard and write a story, going in-depth.”

Aloya learned how to use a camera for this video project and Ethan’s dad is a photographer so he provided some tips.

Skylyn also learned how to use a camera. Her grandfather recently had surgery so she was especially interested in learning about surgery, the risks and the importance of partnerships with your team.

Ethan learned how to edit and took his turn working with the camera.

All questions and answers having to do with the work of B. Braun Medical were destroyed after the interview.

Laurens said he struggled to condense the video to the required time limit.

Billy said he wished he had the opportunity to go back and do some additional video footage but they were given only one opportunity to film.

Laurans said it was great to meet Rex Boland, vice president of B. Braun Medical.

Laurens and Billy will be moving on to Salisbury High School next year. The other members of team said they will be ready to enter next year’s “What So Cool About Manufacturing?” contest.

Advisors for the club are Katie Royer and David Beyer.

“They work really hard in a short time-frame,” Royer said. “The greatest thing they learned was to work together with different viewpoints.”
