School board approves changes

It was a skeleton crew at the Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education meeting April 9. There were three board members physically attending the meeting - Duane Deitrich, Jason Bashaw and Lauren Cieslak. Superintendent Robert Spengler called Stephen Becker and Donald Panto, and they participated in the meeting via conference call. Lois Reed, district business supervisor, and David Knerr, district solicitor, rounded out those in attendance.

The board approved the 2019-20 salaries for secretary/clerks, food service, transportation, custodial/maintenance and administration staff members.

Board members voted unanimously to approve hiring student custodians for summer employment. These students include Bradshaw Henning, Mitchel Lewis, Marissa Montanez, Jordan Nonnemaker, Alyianna Perez, Nikoli Polles, Colby Rau, Matthew Ritter, Nicholas Smell and Derek Troxell.

Also on the list of approvals included additions to the substitute employment list for the 2018-19 school year as well as extracurricular appointments for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years.

The board members approved the purchase of a 2019 Blue Bird 72-passenger school bus.

The Frank J. Troxell Sr. Memorial Scholarship had been started recently and required approval from the board. It was unanimously approved. Troxell died Jan. 30. A retired principal of Catasauqua High School, he was known as “Big Daddy” throughout the district.

Among the approvals included the adoption of a resolution to support Senate Bill 34 and House Bill 526. These bills refer to changes in cyber schooling regulations.

There will be a special board meeting in May regarding Innovative Arts Academy Charter School’s request for charter renewal. The hearing will take place at the district’s administrative building, 201 N. 14th St.

The board of education’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 14 at the administrative building.
