LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN Lower Macungie Library book sale May 3, 4

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library spring 2019 book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 3 and 4 in the newly renovated and expanded Lower Macungie Library. Friends’ preview night is 5-7:30 p.m. May 2. Join the Friends that night and purchase books before the weekend crowds. There will be a bag sale 2:30-4:30 p.m. May 4. All proceeds from the sale benefit the library.

Books are no longer being accepted for the spring sale.

The next Friends meeting will be held 10 a.m. May 18.

Swim lesson signups for Lower Macungie Pool are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Lower Macungie Community Center.

Summer playground signups will take place 6-7:30 p.m. April 24 at the community center. The program runs 9 a.m. to noon weekdays June 24 through Aug. 9 for children ages six to 11 years.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will hold an Earth Day clothes recycling event 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at Concordia Lutheran Church on Brookside Road. Acceptable items for the clothing drive include new and gently used clothing, shoes, coats, bedding and towels (no stuffed animals). More information can be found on Concordia Preschool’s Facebook page. Tax donation receipts are available. There will be family friendly Earth Day activities 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a hot dog cookout. The Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Quarry Road, Alburtis, will hold a nickel carnival 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 28. There will be kids’ games, bingo, a cake walk and food. All are welcome. Proceeds will be donated to Halo Project.

The community center will hold its ninth annual Community Day 4-8 p.m. May 7. Activities include family kite making, face painting, a petting zoo, games, entertainment and live music. Guests will be able to tour the new gymnasium, meeting rooms and children’s library. Mr. and Mrs. Mouse, Spider Hero and Captain Hook will attend to greet children. There will also be representatives from many township clubs and organizations, including the PA State Police, Lower Macungie Fire Department and MedEvac. Food will be available for purchase.

The Lower Lehigh Lions will sponsor a flea market and garage sale 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 11 at Macungie Memorial Park. There will be no rain date this year. In Ancient Oak news: the Ancient Oaks garage sale will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27, rain or shine.

The Ancient Oaks Womens Organization will have its annual banquet May 1 at Superior Restaurant. The organization wishes to thank all who supported the hoagie sale. Profits benefit the 2019 Scholarship Fund.

Lower Macungie offers garden plot rentals on Bogie Avenue and at Camp Olympic. Plots are available to rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact the community center for more information.

The Lower Macungie Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. May 8 at the community center.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon May 7 and 21 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Macungie Ambulance Corps will offer American Heart Association CPR Training – pediatric heartsaver first aid CPR AED 6-8 p.m. April 23; basic CPR 6-7:30 p.m. May 14 and basic life support 6-10 p.m. May 30 at the community center.

The community center offers a number of activities. Classes include card making, community meal prep, belly dance, ballroom dance, tart baking, Tai Chi, Zumba and Pilates. Children’s activities include Kindermusik, cooking classes, video game animation, soccer, robotics and programming and Toddlers and Tutus.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Beginning May 1, the spring yard waste hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off.

The Lower Macungie Library will be closed April 19 and 20 for a spring holiday.

The library has joined the Lehigh Carbon Library Cooperative with 10 other libraries. One library card can be used at 11 libraries in the cooperative and resources from other libraries can be delivered to Lower Macungie Library in one to two days.

Detective Frank Najera and Senior Deputy District Attorney Anna-Kristie Morffi Marks will give proactive steps in how to protect your identity 6-7:30 p.m. April 24.

The teen advisory board for grades six through 12 will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. April 26. They will be doing blind taste tests of store brand versus national brand snacks.

There will be May the Fourth Activity Stations with Star Wars inspired activities 10 a.m. to noon for preschool and elementary age children.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. May 8 to discuss “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann. The book for June 5 is “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles.

Make-It Monday craft program will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. May 6 for ages two and up with adult supervision.

Imaginears for grades kindergarten through third will explore STEAM topics through Disney films 6:30-7:30 p.m. May 13.

Board game lovers can Get In the Game 5-7 p.m. May 15. All ages are welcome for an evening of gaming fun.

A new session of Great Decisions will be offered 7-8:30 p.m. Monday nights through May 20. The discussion program on world affairs is offered by the Foreign Policy Association. The format involves reading a briefing book and watching a DVD, followed by a discussion. There is a fee covering the eight sessions.
