SAUCON VALLEY NOTES – By Maddie Schaffer - Gallard is ‘Mr. Saucon’

Saucon Valley HS held its annual Mr. Saucon event March 21. This event revolves around senior boys who volunteer to perform in a whimsical beauty pageant. The boys participate in many different activities ranging from bathing suit contests to talent shows to a question and answer session.

At the end of the evening two boys are selected to become Mr. Saucon and Mr. Personality of the Year. Senior and Mr. Saucon Master of Ceremonies Zoe Zaharakis said, “It’s a light hearted competition for a good cause… It’s always a fun night that brings in a lot of the community and is an enjoyable event for everyone.”

For 2019 the name of Mr. Personality was awarded to Ryan Holub and the honor of Mr. Saucon was given to Calver Gallard.

“To me, Mr. Saucon means to be proud of the school that saw me grow up, and also shows me that my school is a lot more accepting and tolerant than it had been portrayed to be,” Gallard said.

This was the 5th annual Mr. Saucon event that SVHS has hosted under the guidance of Student Government adviser and mathematics teacher Cheri Chisesi.

“It was an event that was held when I started at Saucon 15 years ago,” Chisesi said. “but it was not held for several years. When Max Daniel was a senior in SGA it was his desire to bring Mr. Saucon back and to use it to help out our new Mini-Thon organization.”

All money raised throughout the night was donated to Saucon Valley’s Mini-Thon program which goes to help children with pediatric cancer.

“The most rewarding part of this event is that the gentlemen in the senior class get together for a great cause,” Chisesi said. “They put themselves out there for everyone to see to raise money. The seniors have always stepped up for this cause and have always been amazing on stage.”

In fact, this year the Mr. Saucon event raised a record-breaking $3,700 for Saucon Valley’s Mini-Thon in order to help it achieve its goal of reaching $40,000.

When asked to remark on what made him decide to participate in the Mr. Saucon event, Gallard explained: “I decided to participate in Mr. Saucon because it was for a great cause, many children are unfortunately sick and we have the chance to make a difference in their lives.”

This year Saucon Valley saw not only the most donations but also its highest number of participants.

“This year we had a record number of senior gentlemen come out for the event,” Chisesi said. “Which says something about this senior class and their willingness to fight for kids with pediatric cancer.”

It is obvious that this event will continue to be a highlight of senior year for many Saucon Valley HS students as well as benefiting a good cause.
