Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin has announced a Slatington man was charged in relation to a multivehicle crash which occurred Dec. 2, 2018.

Nicholas Strohl, 32, of Cherry Street, Slatington, was charged with one count each of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence (of methamphetamine), a felony of the second degree; having an accident involving death or personal injury while not properly licensed, a felony of the third degree; and three counts of recklessly endangering another person, misdemeanors of the second degree.

In addition, he is charged with one count of violating the controlled substance, drug, device and cosmetics act: possession of methamphetamine, an ungraded misdemeanor, and two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, ungraded misdemeanors.

Strohl is also charged with one count each of the following summary offenses: drivers required to be licensed, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, limitations on overtaking on the left, driving on roadways laned for traffic, limitations on turning around, driving at a safe speed, careless and reckless driving.

Strohl is currently incarcerated in Northampton County Prison on unrelated charges.

He will be arraigned via video at a later date.

Martin provided the following information on the crash.

At approximately 4:41 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2018, Trooper Colin Wescoe of Pennsylvania State Police, Troop M, was dispatched to the scene of a three-vehicle crash in the area of Route 145 and Mauser Road, North Whitehall Township.

The vehicles involved were a Honda Accord driven by Strohl; a Honda Ridgeline driven by Charles Karanink, 57, of Jim Thorpe; and a Volkswagen Jetta driven by Timothy Pitts, 55, of Danielsville. Cassidy Pitts, 18, was a passenger in the Jetta.

Both Strohl and Karanink were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township for treatment of their injuries sustained in the crash.

Karanink suffered multiple fractures and underwent numerous surgeries as a result of the incident.

Timothy and Cassidy Pitts suffered minor injuries. Cassidy Pitts is undergoing physical therapy for neck injuries received in the crash.

As a result of the investigation into the crash, it is alleged Strohl was driving at a high rate of speed when he struck Karanink’s Honda Ridgeline head on while traveling in the wrong lane of travel.

After striking the Ridgeline, Strohl’s vehicle rear-ended the vehicle driven by Pitts.

In addition, it is alleged Strohl was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash.
