The Allentown Central Catholic High School Science Olympiad Team placed fourth out of 30 teams in the Science Olympiad Regional Competition at Kutztown University March 14, qualifying for the state competition at Juniata College April 27. The team won 10 medals for their strong performance.

Third place winners included Dynamic Planet (Ryan Schanta and Alex Strohl), Protein Modeling (Alan Garger, Gwen Minogue and Elizabeth Ulicny), Sounds of Music (Michael Fleck and Ryan Schanta) and Thermodynamics (Michael Fleck and Ryan Schanta). Fourth place medalists were Fermi Questions (Gwen Minogue and Alex Strohl) and Forensics (Priyanka Bhashyam and Elizabeth Ulicny). Astronomy (Christina Chi and Jacob Kovatch) placed fifth.

Model UN took place March 15 at Lehigh University. ACCHS hosted the event, which invites high school students to act as United Nations “delegates” by preparing and presenting resolutions seeking to solve world issues in various committees, such as the Security Council and the World Health Organization. ACCHS student Justin Poccia served as the UN Secretary-General during the event. ACCHS medal winners included seniors Nolan Barr, Thomas Perun, Justin Poccia and Ryan Schanta; juniors Priyanka Bhashyam, Paige Egan, Angie Freeman, Anna Haddad and Steven McGlynn and freshman Emily Harclerode. ACCHS took second overall.

The winter sports Mass and awards ceremony was held March 19. During the ceremony, members of the basketball, cheerleading, swim and dive and wrestling teams were recognized. Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Scholar Athlete Nominees and MVPs for each team were also honored. EPC Scholar Athlete nominees included John Cardiges (boys swim and dive), Erin Chlebove (girls swim and dive), Jess Davis (girls basketball), Julia Santos (cheerleading) and Sam Vaughan (boys basketball).

MVPs were Lily Atiyeh (girls dive), Erin Chlebove (girls swim), Jess Davis (girls basketball), Brendan Kern (boys swim), Chad Kratzer (boys basketball), David Kreidler (wrestling) and Grace Peoples (cheerleading).

The Central City Project hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Community Dinner March 20 at Immaculate Conception Church in Allentown. Students and teachers prepared and served an Irish-themed meal to members of the community during this free event. The dinner is one of the CCP’s many outreach activities, which include a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, tutoring at St. John Vianney Regional School and an urban garden.

Many partner school students attended the seventh/eighth grade semi- formal dance March 22. The dance was hosted by the freshman and sophomore student councils in Rockne Hall and it was full of music, dancing and fun.

The Philadelphia Shrine Hop was held March 26. Students and retreat leaders Sr. Sophia Marie and Fr. Mark Searles traveled to Philadelphia for the day, where they visited the National Shrine of St. John Neumann and the Miraculous Medal Shrine. The retreat was one of many spring retreats Central is offering to its students, which include a Stations of the Cross Retreat, a pilgrimage to Emmitsburg, Md. and a Class of 2020 Retreat.

The Red Cross Club held a blood drive to benefit Miller-Keystone March 27 in Masson Auditorium. More than 40 students donated to the cause.

The Viking Glory Dodgeball Tournament was held March 30 at Elite Sports Academy in Emmaus. The event was hosted by the Class of 2020 Student Council and featured many student teams competing for the championship title. Proceeds benefited Team Krause, an organization focused on raising pancreatic cancer awareness.

ACCHS’s 2019 spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” will be held April 4 to 6. The show, nominated for Best Musical at the 2006 Tony Awards, is a parody of 1920s American musical comedies and tells the story of a man listening to the record of his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” while the show comes to life in his apartment. Show times are 7 p.m. April 4 and 5 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 6. Tickets are on sale at acchs.info.

The ACCHS prom will be held 5 to 10 p.m. May 11 at Billera Hall at DeSales University. Tickets will be sold to students through April 11.

The 10th annual ACCHS Football Golf Tournament will be held May 11 at Shepherd Hills Golf Club in Wescosville. There is a cost for tickets and the cost includes greens fee and cart, hot dogs after nine holes, food and drinks, a golfer gift and prizes for first and second place.
