STUDENT PROFILE - Grace Haas, Liberty HS - compiled by Julie Swan
Grade: 12
Family members: Mom, Dad, Owen, Emma, Sean and Noah. I am the oldest of five.
Favorite subject: Anything with math. I have taken almost every math class at Liberty. I love that in math there is always one correct answer, and you can always find that answer through logic. I especially liked calculus, which is why I decided to take it again at Lehigh for dual enrollment.
Activities: For the past four years I have been a member of Liberty’s cross country team and choir. Cross country is my favorite part about high school! The camaraderie between the team is amazing, and I love pushing myself to become better. In choir, I love learning and performing new music, especially for our Christmas concert. For the past three years, I have also participated in track and field, Science Olympiad and French Club. Outside of school, I am a member of my church’s youth group.
Next steps: I want to go to college and major in biomedical engineering. I also want to study neuroscience so I can combine it with the biomedical engineering and help people.
Career goals: I want to design medical devices for patients. Medical devices could mean anything from prosthetics to medical sensors. Biomedical engineering is a relatively new field, so there are a lot of unexplored possibilities.
Heroes: I do not really have a hero. I aspire to be my own person.
Hobbies: I love to read; fiction, fantasy and history are my favorites. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, solving Sudoku puzzles and spending time outside (hiking, biking, swimming, sledding, etc.).
Volunteer/community work: Most of my volunteering has been with children. I have volunteered with Northeast Ministry, helping at a youth summer running program there. I have volunteered with the LHS cross country and track teams at the Liberty Invitational (a middle school meet we hold every fall), Special Olympics and the Runner’s World Half-Marathon. Some other organizations I have helped are the Nitschmann Middle School cross country team, Greater Bethlehem Soccer League, Trail Tenders, Homework Club, tutoring in math, and Cops ‘n’ Kids.
Likes: Hanging out with my friends, jazz, watching Steelers games, peanut butter
Dislikes: Rap music, spiders, watching golf
Greatest accomplishment (so far): I qualified for both the 2016 and 2017 PIAA state cross country championships. I worked hard to get to that point, and running in such a big race was an amazing experience.
Advice for peers: In high school (and life in general), everyone has a lot of responsibilities and obligations, so always find at least one thing that makes you happy. Find that one thing that makes you excited to wake up every day. For me, that has been choir and cross country. There is something for everyone!
