Geiger caps strong season at RIT

Several former Emmaus High School athletes competed on college teams during the recently completed winter season.

Rochester Institute of Technology senior sprinter Curtis Geiger capped a stellar winter season earlier this month. At the AARTFC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Geiger placed third in the 200-meter dash in 22.43 seconds. He also helped the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams come in fifth place. A week earlier, he took first in the 200-meter dash (22.22 seconds), second in 60-meter dash (7.01) and second n the 400-meter dash (49.98).

DeSales sophomore guard Matt Kachelries was a steady distributor and scorer for the Bulldogs’ basketball team. In 27 starts, he averaged 11.4 points and 6.1 assists per game. He scored a season-high 26 points against Wilkes and dished out a season-best 13 dimes against Manhattanville. He also averaged six rebounds a game for the Bulldogs (21-7 overall; 12-2 in conference), who won the MAC Freedom championship.

Playing for Mineral College in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), David Kachelries produced a successful winter season. He finished averaging 12.9 points, 6.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game on 56.7 percent field goal shooting. He started in 31 of the team’s 32 games and scored a season-best 26 points against State Fair in late February. Mineral College is in Park Hills Missouri.

Kutztown’s Ashley Petre recently capped a historic indoor track and field season. The former Hornet had a career-best throw of 55 feet in the weight throw at the PSAC Indoor Championships, the fourth best weight throw in school history. That mark earned her a second-place finish at the league meet. She is a four-time All-Atlantic Region and All-PSAC honoree.

York College junior forward Joey Polczynski helped lead the Spartans all the way to the NCAA Division III Tournament and a 22-8 record this past winter. In 30 games played, he averaged 11.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Spartans, who finished as runners-up in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Bucknell diver Jessica Hurlubrt made an immediate impact for the Bison during her freshman season. She placed third in 1-meter diving at the ECAC Championships, posting a total score of 214.70 points.

Kiyae White, a freshman on the Auburn women’s hoops team, got her first taste of Division I basketball this winter. In 14 games, White average 1.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in nearly seven minutes per contests.

Kelly Harvey, a sophomore freestyle swimmer at Clarion, participated in a wide range of events this winter season. In her latest meet against Indiana of Pennsylvania in early December, she swam the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:36.24. She also posted season bests in the following events: 200-yard freestyle (2:02.21), 200-yard butterfly (2:21.03), 500-yard freestyle (5:18.66) and 1,650-yard freestyle (18:12.86).

Sophomore Colby Kocon, a freestyle sprinter on the Franklin and Marshall men’s swimming team, had a stellar winter season. He posted the team’s seventh-fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle on the season, swimming it in 22.37 seconds at the Centennial Conference Championships.

It didn’t take long for Monmouth freshman swimmer Ricky Thomas to make an impact on the college scene. As part of his successful inaugural season, Thomas was a part of the 200-yard medley relay team that set a new school record in the event, placing fourth at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

Casey Young recently capped a sold junior season for the Seton Hall women’s swimming team. She won the 1,000-yard freestyle against Monmouth earlier this year in 10:56.44. She placed 19th in the same event at the Big East Championships to cap her season.

Ithaca College junior Maura Beuttel recently competed her third collegiate swimming season. She helped the team’s 800-yard freestyle relay team finish as the fastest B team at the Liberty League Championships.
