Girls fall to Avonworth

The Whitehall softball team met Avonworth High School last weekend among the picturesque backdrop of The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Breach, but wound up dropping the opener to the Antelopes.

The Zephyrs lost 4-2 to Avonworth, a school situated in Pittsburgh. They surrendered four in the first, and that was enough for the Antelopes to leave the sunny clime with their first win.

Head coach Blake Morgan said the experience, which included a couple of scrimmages, was a good learning experience.

“The team learned a lot about each other playing together for the first time and we learned a lot about them,” said Morgan.

He said that it was an experience for everyone as they prepare for their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference schedule which began Tuesday against Central.

“As coaches we learned what we did well and what we have to do a better job preparing them for,” said Morgan. “As a team we did some things right but realize it’s a long season and we have something to improve on every day of that long season.”

The Zephyrs banged out seven hits, equaling Avonworth in that department. Meghan Hutter and Madison Cunningham collected two hits to lead the team, with Cunningham stroking a double for one of her hits. Additionally, Rachel Arner, Abigail Reese and Mackenzie Laub each had a knock. Both their runs were scored in the third inning as Arner and Amanda Mortimer scored. However, they left nine runners on base during the game.

Cunningham went the distance in the circle, allowing three earned runs. However, she only walked one batter and now gets set to compete among her peers in the EPC.

With Tuesday’s game on track, the Zephyrs will continue their week with games against Nazareth and North Pocono.
