A princess, a young man disguised as a prince and a wish-granting genie take to the stage in the Eyer Middle School production of “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” March 28 through 30.

Performances are 7 p.m. March 28, 29 and 30 with a matinée 2 p.m. March 30.

The musical is adapted from the 1992 Disney animated feature film “Aladdin,” which is perhaps best known for the performance of Robin Williams as Genie. A live action version of the animated feature is slated to be released in May and star Will Smith as Genie.

A musical adaption of the movie came to Broadway in 2014.

The story of Aladdin is taken from the classic “1,001 Nights” or “1,001 Arabian Nights,” a collection of shorts stories and folk tales often attributed to storyteller Scherazade. According to legend, Scherazade tells the 1,001 stories to King Shahryar, her husband, to stay alive. The king, who has his first wife executed after learning of her infidelity, doles out the same fate to subsequent wives at dawn the day after they are married to avoid being hurt again. This policy continues for several years.

Sherazade, who knows what happens to women who marry King Shahryar, tells stories to the king for 1,001 nights to escape execution. Each story is a cliffhanger and the king, intrigued by the stories, allows Sherazade to live each morning so he may find out what happens next in the stories. By the end of 1,001 days he has fallen in love with Sherazade and learned from the stories.

The story of “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp,” is said by some scholars to not be one of the original “1,001 Nights” but an addition to the collection by Antoine Galland who often is credited as the first translator and collector of the stories.

In “Aladdin JR,” Aladdin and his friends Babkak, Omar and Kassim, are trying to eke out a living on city streets when Aladdin is used by the treacherous Jafar to help find a magic lamp and the wish-granting genie who lives in the lamp. Jafar wants to use the lamp and the genie to assume power. Aladdin finds the lamp and uses one of the wishes to disguise himself as a prince so he can meet Princess Jasmine

Flying carpets and familiar songs entertain audiences as the show moves toward the empowering happy ending.

In the Eyer Middle School production, Louis Lichter will play Aladdin. Ethan Ervin plays Genie. Gabi Kutz is Princess Jasmine. Ethan Ferris plays Kassim. Molly Yard plays Babkak and Alexandra Murphy is Omar.

Isir will be played by Julia Brown and Madeline Carlson. Ananya Roy and Sylvia Sokolofski will play Manal. Rose Alsleben and Maggie Machulsky will play Rajah.

Ben Eustice is Jafar and Lila Schneider plays Iago. Aiden Panko is the sultan.

The cast also includes T. J. Seislove as Razoul, captain of the guards, Nick De Santis as Prince Abdullah and Zachary Ritter as the apple vendor. Brielle Eisenberg portrays the fortune teller and Lorelei Kilka plays the shop owner. Elijah Daly and Madi Servais portray young beggars. Carter Salomon, Craig Salomon and Ben Wiese appear as Abdullah’s attendants.

Molly Magro and Jennifer Najarian co-direct the production. Najarian also choreographed the production. Jacqueline Swauger is the assistant director. Lindsay Graziano is musical director. Matt Krempasky is technical director. Erin Knecht is costume director. Nicole Gillen, Anne Kukitz and David Willett designed the sets.

The animated feature film “Aladdin” earned Academy and Golden Globe awards for best original score.

The Broadway version earned a Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical for James Monroe Iglehart for his work as Genie.

“Aladdin JR.” is a one-act adaptation.
