EMMAUS COLUMN

The Community Fun Day held April 13 at Lower Macungie Middle School, 6299 Lower Macungie Road, includes the 21st annual used book sale organized by the Friends of the Emmaus Public Library. The book sale held in the school’s cafeteria begins 7 a.m. and ends 3:45 p.m. The sale shuts down 2:45 p.m. for 15 minutes and re-opens 3 p.m. for a brown bag blow-out. Shoppers are invited to cram as many books as they can into a standard brown paper grocery bag. (There is a minimum fee per bag. Please bring your own bag).

The day’s events also include a nutrition health and safety fair organized by Nutrition Inc., the food service provider of the East Penn School District. The health fair held 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school’s lobby and parking lot features free food samples and health information.

Members of Emmaus and Upper Milford Township communities are invited to participate in Earth Day 2019 at Emmaus Community Park April 13. The event begins 8:30 a.m. for coffee and organization. Cleanup begins 9 a.m. Included in the event is electronics recycling (some fees apply- see uppermilford.net for price list) and document shredding.

The Emmaus Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt 1 p.m. April 20 at Emmaus Community Park, 1401 Shimerville Road. For information, visit EmmausKiwanis.org.

The Emmaus Lions Club will hold its annual Pennsylvania Dutch Chowder Sale April 6 at Emmaus Community Park. Containers will be available for pick up and purchase between 7 and 11 a.m. For more information on becoming a Lion or to pre-order chowder, contact any Lion member or call 610-965-7355.

The Emmaus Lioness Lions Club will hold its 22nd annual basket party April 17 at the Agri-Plex at Allentown fairgrounds, 302 N. 17th St. Doors open 4 p.m.; drawings begin 7 p.m. There is an admission fee. Food is available for purchase. To purchase tickets, call 610-967-3561. Tickets will be available at the door. Bring a canned good to donate and receive one extra number for the basket raffle.

The Emmaus Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting 7 p.m. April 11 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. The program, presented by Andrew Kerstetter, Carl Wieder and Nancy Matika, using a PowerPoint presentation, is “The Emmaus 1959 Centennial.” All are welcome.

The Emmaus Historical Society museum, 218 Main St., will have exhibits corresponding with the Centennial program’s topic. This month the museum exhibit includes a colorful Easter display. The society has some “FUN”draising events coming up: bus trips to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse to see “Take Me Away” April 23 and “Over the Woods” June 11 and to Rainbow Comedy Theater to see “Funny Money” Aug. 27. Michael Stehlin from Muhlenberg College will present a program, “Finance is Elementary,” for youth in third through fifth grades 4:30 p.m. April 4. Stehlin will present a program for teens on the best way to handle money 11:30 a.m. April 6. Sign up in advance at the front desk.

Attendees are invited to test their library knowledge in a fun Jeopardy-style game, Emmaus Public Library Game Show, for the whole family 6:30 p.m. April 10.

The Pinterest group will be making curious bunny pots 7 p.m. April 8.

Dr. Ziad Munson, East Penn School board member and Lehigh University sociology professor, will discuss the state of school security in America 7 p.m. April 15. RSVP to save a seat.

Staff from Sen. Lisa Boscola’s, D-18th, mobile office is at the library 10:05 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday.

The Shelter House Society will hold its annual Patriots’ Day Dinner 6 p.m. April 27 at Emmaus Citizen’s Fire Company #1, South Sixth and Broad streets. There is a cost. Donald Breininger will demonstrate the making of Linsey-Woolsey Jacquard bed coverlets as used in the Lehigh Valley. Non-members are welcome. For tickets, call 610-797-6687.

The Emmaus Senior Citizens group meets 1 p.m. every Friday at St. Matthew’s E.C. Church, Fifth and Ridge streets. All local senior citizens are invited to attend the meetings. The programs for April are April 5, Dave Machetti, musician; April 12, a film; April 19 there is no meeting and April 26 is game day.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. April 1 and 15 in council chambers at borough hall 19 S. Fourth St. The borough offices will be closed April 19 for the holiday.

The Woman’s Club of Emmaus will host its annual Spring Card Party 11:30 a.m. April 25 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. This event is a fundraising event to support the scholarship and academic awards for graduating Emmaus High School seniors. The Emmaus Garden Club meets noon April 2 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St. The perennial diva, Stephanie Cohen, will present a program, “Perennials Spring to Fall.” An award-winning lecturer and writer, Cohen will also have her books for sale. Come out and cheer on the runners participating in the Emmaus Roadrunners 4-mile race through some of Emmaus’ residential streets April 14. A kids’ run begins 9:15 a.m. at Emmaus High School. The 4-miler begins 9:30 a.m. For information, visit racedirector@lvrr.org.

The latest public art project for the Emmaus Arts Commission is the 2019 Emmaus Paint-A-Hydrant Program. The commission, in partnership with Emmaus Borough and the Emmaus Fire Department, is helping to beautify the borough’s well-worn town hydrants. The commission is currently seeking applications from interested artists or artist teams to create a design to enhance the hydrant. Submission deadline is April 15.
