Allentown Band returns to Carnegie Hall

The Allentown Band performs the “Showcase Concert” at the New York International Music Festival presented by World Projects, 8 p.m. April 16, Carnegie Hall, New York City.

Dutch composer Johan de Meij wiill conduct the Allentown Band for his composition, “Pennsylvania Faux Songs,” commissioned by the Allentown Band for its 190th anniversary.

The one-movement suite includes five “Folk songs Pennsylvanians forgot to write,” according to the composer: “On the Banks of the Susquehanna River,” “Girl form Allegheny,” “The Gettysburg March,” ” Punxsutawney Groundhog Waltz” and “Allentown Jig.” In addition to concert-band instrumentation, the piece includes penny whistle, accordion and harp.

The Allentown Band’s Showcase Concert program, conducted by Allentown Band Conductorr Ronald Demkee, includes: “Russlan and Ludmilla Overture,” by Glinka; “Colonial Song,” by Grainger; “Mars and Venus,” from “Looking Upward Suite,” by Sousa; “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral,” from “Lohengrin,” by Wagner, and “Dance of the Jesters,” from “The Snow Maiden,” by Tchaikovsky.

The International Music Festival is a three-day adjudicated event for high school, college and adult bands and orchestras from the United States and Europe.

The Allentown Band performed the Showcase Concert at Carnegie Hall for the festival twice previously, in 2016 and 2009. The Allentown Band also performed the Showcase Concert in 2010 for the Washington, D.C., International Music Festival at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.

Round-trip charter bus service from the Allentown Fairgrounds and tickets for the concert are available on a limited basis.
