The Allentown Central Catholic High School Science Olympiad team competed at the East Penn Conference Science Olympiad Championship March 1 at Northampton Community College. The team finished second and won four gold medals and one silver medal. First place winners included Anatomy (Pamela Gonzalez and Jack Mallon), Boomilever (Alan Garger and Luke Kuklis), Disease Detectives (Priyanka Bhashyam and Michael Fleck) and Fermi Questions (Gwen Minogue and Alex Strohl). Second place winner was Designer Genes (Sydni Ernst and Karina Mihura).

The ACCHS Scholastic Scrimmage team competed at the Salisbury High School Invitational March 9. The varsity team, consisting of Ryan Schanta, Matt Simcoe, Alex Strohl and Karina Mihura, won first place after defeating Phillipsburg 1,030-420 in the semifinals and Whitehall 890-170 in the finals. The junior varsity team of Simon Ernst, Meagan Niechwiadowicz and Sam Ulicny placed second in their division. Another junior varsity team of Cooper Mello, Jonathan Romero and Nick Santos placed third.

Neil Maydick performed at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region V State Band Concert at Conrad Weiser High School in Berks County March 9. He was among 144 students from 69 schools in 15 counties led by guest conductor Kyle Glaser from Texas State University. Maydick is a four-year District Band performer and two-year Regional Band performer.

Central Catholic students participated in a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser at DeSales University March 9-10. The fundraiser was called “Tomorrowland” and involved high school students staying up for 12 hours overnight to simulate the feeling of one round of chemotherapy. It was hosted by student Isabella Joyce, a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Best Friends Forever Club spent the afternoon of March 11 celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with their buddies at Mercy Special Learning Center in Allentown. The club was joined by the O’Grady Quinlan School of Irish Dance and Allentown Mayor Ray O’Connell.

Justin Pasquale was recognized for his exceptional football performance at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Lehigh Valley Scholar Athlete Awards dinner March 3.

The Viking basketball team played Archbishop Carroll High School in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. 4A basketball playoffs March 8. The Vikings played well but were defeated 64-57.

David Kreidler was very successful at the PIAA 2A wrestling state championships in Hershey March 8-9, where he placed eighth. Kreidler also was a 2A District XI 113 Champion (Central’s first since 1995) and placed second in the Southeastern 2A Regionals.

The Central Catholic swim team competed at the PIAA Swimming and Diving State Championships at Bucknell University in Lewisburg March 12-15. Lily Atiyeh placed third in 2A girls diving with a score of 375.50.

The swim team also saw success at the District XI Championships. The girls 200 medley relay team took first place with a time of 1:53.51. The members of the team were Erin Chlebove, Emma Luchetti, Grace Schucavage and Amanda Svetz.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament hosted by the 2019 student council was held March 16 in Rockne Hall. Participating student teams competed in a round-robin style tournament and the winning team received a trophy.

The Winter Sports Awards and Mass were held March 19 in Rockne Hall. After a school Mass, winter athletes were recognized from various sports, including basketball, competition cheer, swimming and wrestling. MVPs and EPC Scholar Athlete nominees were also announced.

Allentown Central Catholic’s 2019 spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone” will be held April 4-6. The show, nominated for best musical at the 2006 Tonys, is a parody of 1920s American musical comedies and tells the story of a man listening to the record of his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” while the show comes to life in his apartment. Show times are 7 p.m. April 4 and 5 and 2 and 7 p.m. April 6. Tickets are on sale at acchs.info.

The Future Vikings seventh and eighth grade semiformal dance will be held 7-10 p.m. March 22 in Rockne Hall. Ticket sales are open to all seventh and eighth grade partner school students.

The Central Catholic music department has exciting opportunities coming up for partner school musicians. Fourth to eighth graders can compete in the ACCHS music competition April 13; seventh and eighth graders have the opportunity to win scholarships to the school through the competition.

The Side-by-Side Concert will be held April 27 and is open to sixth through eighth grade students. Participating musicians will practice music with the high school band and chorus and they will later perform alongside them at the concert.

Awards for the music competition will also be presented during the concert.
