Tennis starts season with two victories
The Whitehall boys tennis team split their first two games of the season, defeating William Allen in their opener, followed by a loss to Liberty on their home courts.
They defeated the Canaries 6-0 to begin league action. They won all of their matches to get the season off on a strong note. It was a good beginning for a team that has a number of players assuming new roles.
“The kids played real well,” said head coach Bob Panny. “We had a lot of good rallies, and a lot of good serves; we played good. We were happy with the performance.”
Liberty posed a bigger problem on Friday, their home opener. Panny said that they were struggling to win games, but they were still winning points.
“We’re having some nice rallies, we’re just not coming through with some of the hits,” he said.
In their match against Liberty, Rohn had trouble harnessing his serve. He made a number of unforced errors and that helped Louis Gruber win the match 6-0, 6-2.
Panny said that Rohn’s struggle with his serve is something that happens in sports, whether it’s a golf swing or a jump shot. Some days it’s just not there. He said that they’ve only been on the courts for a few days and Rohn’s game will start to round into form the more often he plays.
“He’ll get it cranked up,” said Panny.
Panny said that Rohn’s serve was working in the opener, winning 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Demjan fell to Liberty’s David Lynn, 6-1, 6-0, while Anthony Ronca defeated Mallory at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Panny said that Demjan’s match was very competitive with a lot of long rallies. The same held true for Mallory at No. 3 singles as he battled with a tough opponent, staying competitive throughout the match.
Rohn and the rest of the Zephyrs got it cranked it up against the Slaters on Saturday. They bounced back with a win, upending Bangor 5-2.
Rohn got back on track, defeating Evan Gordan 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Demjan also found the win column, knocking off Bangor’s Grant Kaye 6-2, 6-2.
Josh Mallory completed the singles sweep, outlasting Anthony Altobelli in a grueling three-setter, winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-0.
The Zephs continued their mastery in doubles, winning at No. 1 singles as Rohn and Demjan defeated Gordan and Kaye, 6-0, 6-1.
Also prevailing in doubles were No. 2 tandem Daniel Jablonski and Daniel Lim. The pair were put to the test in a tough, three-setter, pulling out the match after suffering a loss in the second set. They wound up defeating Gavin Andreeko and Kinderson Ramsey 6-1, 3-6, 7-6
With the win, the Zephs ended their first week of action 2-1.
