Taylor George named scholar-athlete for Feb.

Brooklyn College women’s basketball sophomore guard and

Whitehall native Taylor George was named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for February 2019.

George, a transfer student from Temple University, has been playing basketball for as long as she can remember.

“The support I have received from (Brooklyn College) in regards to basketball has been amazing. It’s an experience very little people get to have,” exclaimed George.

The two-year member of the Bulldogs’ squad has had quite an eventful collegiate career so far. Her team narrowly missed winning its second-straight CUNYAC women’s basketball title with a 76-65 loss to Hunter College in the 2019 championship game.

Last season, Brooklyn defeated Staten Island, 59-50, for the program’s first title since 1980. George, a freshman at the time, scored 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. She eventually went on to be named the 2017-18 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and ECAC Rookie of the Year.

“Winning the 2017-18 CUNYAC Championship has been my favorite memory from my collegiate career so far,” states George.

Bulldogs’ head coach Alex Lang expressed, “Taylor is a dream to coach. She is someone who is self-motivated on the court and in the classroom, and is always ready for the next challenge. Our team and coaching staff is extremely proud of her in being named for this award.”

The speech-language pathology major does not find balancing her academic and athletic life to be extremely challenging.

“I was a three-sport athlete in high school. I had no choice but to learn time management at a young age,” she said.

“Basketball is a competitive sport. Both basketball and the classroom, especially my major, push me to be the best version of myself. I am always striving for a better GPA to get into graduate school.”

Currently holding a 3.67 GPA and having scored in double figures in all eight games she played in February, George earned Scholar-Athlete of the Month honors. On Feb. 11, in a 66-57 win over John Jay, George posted a season-high 10 steals with 16 points - her first double-double of the season. Two of the month’s contests were part of the CUNYAC Tournament, while another was a 77-47 win over Neumann University in the first round of the ECAC Tournament. Overall, the team posted a 7-1 record in February, with their only loss coming in the CUNYAC title game.

“Being Scholar-Athlete of the Month means a lot to me. It was not something I was expecting, but it is a great accomplishment and it shows that my hard work is paying off,” she exclaimed.

Another accolade George received in the month of February was being selected to the CUNYAC All-Star Second Team. The sophomore ranked second on the team with 14.0 points per game and led the Bulldogs with 88 steals on the season.

She reached double figures in scoring in 22 of 28 games this year.

When George is not in the classroom or on the court, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, going shopping and playing with her dog. She also babysits in her spare time to prepare her for a career in speech pathology. In addition, George is the Vice President of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association at Brooklyn College.
