A long-lost sports trophy that has resurfaced will be placed in one of the display cases in Northampton Area High School.
Robert J. Yanders, Northampton Area School District director of operations, and Robert Mentzell, school director, presented the silver trophy to Joseph S. Kovalchik, NASD superintendent of schools, at the March 11 board of education meeting.
“It’s been in the maintenance building for a long time,” Yanders said.
“It’s not a Frantz trophy, is it?” quipped NASD Board of Education President David Gogel.
School board Vice President Chuck Frantz owns and operates Frantz Trophies & Plaques, Northampton.
Yanders credited Mentzell with researching information about the trophy.
Mentzell gave Yanders a copy of an article, headlined High School Field Day Sports, published in The Cement News, dated June 8, 1917, which reported on the presentation of a trophy at the event.
“The local schools held their annual Field Day on the Wolf Building campus,” the article states.
“There were many thrilling events that brought the large attendance to their feet.
“The Senior Class had little trouble taking the High School trophy,” stated the article.
Mentzell said the trophy appears to be made of silver.
