Northampton: ‘Mary Poppins’

“Mary Poppins” arrives on the stage at 7 p.m. March 21, 22, 23 and 2 p.m. March 24, auditorium, Northampton Area High School, 1619 Laubach Avenue, Northampton.

Nanny Mary Poppins flies into the chaotic Banks household in 1910 London. With her multi-talented friend Bert, Mary brings magic and common sense to siblings Jane and Michael Banks, and to their dysfunctional parents as well.

“The musical ‘Mary Poppins’ includes the spectacular story and magic of the original movie, and adds fun new songs and characters that audiences will be sure to love,” says Northampton production director-choreographer Gianna Neal.

Assisting Neal are music director Phil Diaz, orchestra conductor Angela Mitchell, set designer Damon Gelb, costume designer Judy Pursell, set builder Tony Beleno and production manager Rob Hercik.

The musical, a fusion of P. L. Travers’ children’s books and Walt Disney’s 1964 movie, has music and lyrics by Clark Gesner.

The Broadway production was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 2007, receiving one Tony.

Fan favorite songs include “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Other numbers include “Jolly Holiday,” “Feed the Birds” and “Step in Time.”
