Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of redemption and political turmoil, “Les Misérables: School Edition” takes to the barricades at Emmaus High School at 7 p.m. March 13, 14, 15, 16 and 2 p.m. March 16 and 17, auditorium, Emmaus High School, 500 Macungie Avenue, Emmaus.

The iconic tale of social injustice set in 19th-century France follows the journey of Jean Valjean, a peasant recently released from prison after serving a harsh term for stealing a loaf of bread. Inspired by an act of mercy, he becomes a successful and benevolent businessman, only to be pursued relentlessly by Police Inspector Javert.

Producer and director Jill Kuebler is assisted by music director and choreography coordinator Rita Cortez, choreographer Luke Csordas, orchestra conductor Doug Bolasky, backstage director Steve Braglio, costume designer Lori Ross and student directors Lauren Leader, Delvis Martinez and Gabriella Slak.

The music is written by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with additional material by James Fenton. The book is adapted by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.

The original 1987 Broadway production received eight Tony Awards out of 12 nominations. The 2014 Broadway revival received three Tony nominations.

Musical numbers include “One Day More,” “The People’s Song (Do You Hear the People Sing),” “At the End of the Day” and “Master of the House.”
