VIKING VOICES
Allentown Central Catholic High School students joined forces with the University of Notre Dame Club of the Lehigh Valley Feb. 16 for a Mary’s Shelter Cay Galgon Center Day of Service. Students cleaned, organized supplies and spent time with the Bethlehem center’s residents.
The 85th Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Meeting was Feb. 23 at Northampton Community College. Participating students completed science projects in various areas of study, including physics, biology and chemistry. First place winners will advance to the state meeting at Penn State in May. First place winners included Sarah Boardman, Daniela Collins, Sydni Ernst, Michael Fleck, Elena Kreger, Natasha Kuklis (who also received a perfect score), Moira Manzella, William McGlynn, Ian McMullen, Ashleigh Meskill, Alana Michener, Kelsey Rodowicz, Maria Romero and Mary Wilson. Second place winners were Lana Ebert, Simon Ernst, Liam Gibson, Pamela Gonzalez, Riley Horoshko, Isabella Joyce, Luke Kuklis, Stephen McGlynn, Emma Ossiander, Maddy Sayegh, Elizabeth Ulicny, Sam Ulicny and Kara Wang. Third place winner was Emilie Wright.
Kairos XX was held Feb. 26 to March 1. Kairos, whose name comes from the Greek word for “God’s time,” is a four-day retreat for seniors at the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville. Participants are led during the retreat by adult and student leaders. The retreat focuses on relationships with God, oneself and others. Student leaders were Alex Abouafech, Samantha Austin, Brendan Dwyer, Chris Mawindi, Neil Maydick, Lauren Minutella, Gracia Rother and Maria Romero.
The Viking basketball team advanced to the District 11 4A Playoffs. The team defeated Jim Thorpe 69-36 in the quarterfinals and Northwestern Lehigh 66-41 in the semifinals Feb. 26. The Vikings played Bethlehem Catholic in the District Championship March 1.
David Kreidler was named the District 11 2A Wrestling 113 Champion Feb. 23 after a 9-2 decision win over Northwestern (Jake Dellicker). Kreidler also bested Palmerton (Gabriel Ramos) 19-3 in the quarterfinals and Saucon Valley (C. Arciuola) 6-5 in the semifinals. He competed in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. Class 2A Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships at Wilson High School March 1 and 2.
Vikette diver Lily Atiyeh won the District 11 2A Diving Championship Feb. 23 with a score of 419.50 points. This was her third straight diving district championship.
Timothy McGorry has been announced as the new head football coach for the Vikings. McGorry is a 1999 alum of Central and was the assistant football coach in 2004. He has also worked as an offensive coordinator at various Lehigh Valley high schools and colleges, including Moravian College, Parkland and Lehigh University.
A Hoops and Hops Viking Nation Social will be held at Volpe’s Sports Bar in Emmaus 2-6 p.m. March 23. The admission fee includes a buffet dinner and two beverages. Payment will be accepted at the door and proceeds will benefit Viking Fest 2019.
ACCHS’s 2019 spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” will be held April 4-6. The show, nominated for best musical at the 2006 Tony Awards, is a parody of 1920s American musical comedies and tells the story of a man listening to the record of his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” while the show comes to life in his apartment. Show times are 7 p.m. April 4 and 5 and 2 and 7 p.m. April 6. Tickets are on sale at acchs.info.
