Zephyrs fall to Emmaus
When Tyler Holubowski’s three-pointer cut Emmaus’ lead to eight points halfway through the third period, the Hornets decided that was enough and called a timeout.
In that huddle stood a 6-9 run-buster. And once they broke the huddle, the plan was to get it down low to Zach Sabol where the senior muscled his way inside; scored the hoop; got the foul.
Run over.
With Sabol completing the three-point play, the score went back up double digits and the Green Hornets went on to defeat the Zephyrs 64-35 in the last game of the season.
Head coach Jeff Jones acknowledged Sabol’s impact down low, a player who recently crossed the 1,000-point mark for his career. He can use his size to carve out space, while keeping the ball above his shoulders to avoid a turnover, and that makes him hard to stop. His ability to put the run on ice helped the visiting Hornets complete the series sweep against the Zephyrs.
Jones said that Sabol, who finished with 15 points, is an all-league performer who can influence the game both offensively and defensively.
“That’s a pretty nice luxury they have,” said Jones.
Along with Sabol, they can swing the ball to Mark Swedberg who finished with 20 points, or Bryce Diehl who knocked down six, or Ethan Parvel who dropped in five. It’s a collection of versatile players that make them hard to defend.
“They have all the pieces,” said Jones.
While the greater individual talent may reside on their bench, Jones said that his group of players know only one way to play, and they demonstrated that again in their final game.
“We’ve got kids who compete like hell,” said Jones. “They gave everything that they had all season long.”
´The Zephyrs trailed by 11 at halftime and were starting to make some inroads in the third quarter. With buckets from Joe Lisicky underneath and Joe Herman from behind the arc, followed by Holubowski’s long range splash, the Zephyrs were beginning to mount a run.
They kept grinding as Dylan McGinley’s basket kept the Zephyrs within striking distance at 37-28 as the third quarter was winding down, but one the final period hit, the Green Hornets began to pull away for their nineteenth win of the season. However, that excellent record didn’t earn them the top seed in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championships. That honor went to Bethlehem Catholic who finished 20-3 this year.
Lisicky was especially effective again. He finished the game with 12 points to lead the Zephs. Jones said that his absence really hurt the team, suffering the injury against Pocono Mountain East. With Lisicky in the lineup they defeated the Cardinals 62-58. Jones said it was their most complete game of the year, and they pulled off the impressive win against a PME squad who’s seeded third in the league tourney.
Jones said Lisicky’s absence forced them to move players around, and in turn, altering their substitution patterns. His injury also came when they stared to get into the meat of their division schedule.
“It was just unfortunate timing,” said Jones.
McGinley continued his solid play, finishing with eight points. Senior Joe Herman knocked down five, while Holubowski added three, and senior Na’Mirr Boatwright finished with two.
The Zephyrs finished the season 7-15.
