Sheckler News: Activities planned for Sheckler kids

TV Turn Off Week begins Feb. 17 and continues through Feb. 23. Good luck to those students taking part in this challenge.

Also, in honor of Read Across America/TV Turn Off Week, Sheckler Elementary School will be celebrating with special events planned throughout the week. This year’s theme is “Scholastic Park Read-A-Saurus Rex.”

The Scholastic book fair will be occurring Feb. 14-21. Students will have the opportunity to preview books or even make purchases during their library class.

The book fair will also be taking place in the cafe during literacy night, giving families a chance to shop together and make purchases.

There will be a lot of guest reading going on for students the week of Feb. 19-22.

Feb. 19 is class buddy read-aloud day. Students in third and fourth grades will come and read to students in kindergarten and first and second grades. Then, guest readers are coming from Catasauqua High School Feb. 20 to visit students and read to them.

On Feb. 21, students will have a guest author. Sharon O’Mara Maida is visiting Sheckler Elementary to present an assembly to all students. She is the author of “Through Kenyan Eyes,” a series of children’s books that examine visual impairment and the perseverance of those afflicted.

There will also be a daily trivia contest happening throughout the week with questions geared to specific grade levels each day.

It’s sure to be a fun-filled week with so many exciting things happening.

Sheckler students will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with classroom parties.

Schools are closed Feb. 15 and 18 for the Presidents Day holiday. Regular classes will resume Feb. 19.

Students recognized the 100th day of school Feb. 8.

The seventh annual family literacy night will take place at Sheckler Feb. 21. Students and their families are invited to Sheckler from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to be part of the fun. There will be lots of activities going on this evening for families to enjoy together, including a book nook, where you can hear books read aloud by a local author, grade-level bingo, a dino walk race, photo booths, fossil making, a bone dig and DaVinci Science Center activities.

Tables will be set up in the gymnasium with information on some great organizations to join or learn about. CAST will be promoting this year’s musical, “The Addams Family.”

A basket auction will be taking place, and tickets will be available to purchase for a chance of winning some great prize baskets. You must be present to win.

Sheckler Home and School will be selling food at the food court. All proceeds from the auction and food sales will be going to Home and School to benefit the students with activities and events held throughout the year.

Families will have an opportunity to shop and make purchases at the Scholastic book fair being held in the school’s cafeteria as well.
