A Viking Nation Ski Night will be held at Bear Creek Mountain Resort 4 p.m. Feb. 13. There is a cost; the event is sponsored by Viking Fest 2019. A flyer, which can be found on the school’s Facebook page, can also be presented that night to purchase a ticket.

The ACCHS athletics department held a medical information seminar Jan. 31 in the school cafeteria. The event provided information to new athletes and seventh and eighth grade students about playing a spring sport, registration and dates for the school’s free physicals and ImPACT tests, which provide a baseline for concussion diagnoses. Students must take the ImPACT test every two years to participate in a Central sport; February dates include 3:15 to 5 p.m. Feb. 14, 25 and 26 in Room 400. All students must also complete a physical evaluation before participating in a sport. Free sports physicals will be held 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in the 400’s hallway at Central.

Brianna Ridley was recently featured in an article written by ACCHS alumnus Amy Impellizzeri for booksbywomen.org. Ridley was interviewed by Impellizzeri, who is also her writing mentor and was a 2014 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Bronze Winner and a National Indie Excellence Awards Finalist for her 2014 novel “Lemongrass Hope.” Ridley will attend Susquehanna University this fall, where she will double major in psychology and creative writing.

Parent course selection night for the 2019-2020 school year will be held 6 p.m. Feb. 6 in Masson Auditorium. The event will provide an overview of courses available to students entering grades 10 through 12. Teachers and counselors representing all academic departments will be available to answer questions.

Catholic Youth Organization’s basketball night was held Jan. 22 in Rockne Hall during the Vikette-Northampton game. Members of the St. John Vianney, Good Shepherd, St. Elizabeth’s, St. Thomas More and St. Ann’s girls basketball teams came out to the game to be recognized and to show their support for the Vikettes. The St. John Vianney kindergarten to fourth grade cheerleaders also came to cheer with the ACCHS cheerleaders.

Both the Vikings and Vikettes defeated Parkland High School Jan. 25, with the Vikings finishing 69-63, clinching the District XI berth and the Vikettes winning 36-31. Both schools combined forces to support Coaches vs. Cancer, a program that empowers basketball teams and their coaches to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The Vikettes and the Lady Trojans also collaborated to support Camelot for Children, an organization that provides support to children with disabilities and illnesses.

Neil Maydick performed in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District X Band Concert Jan. 25 at Catasauqua High School. Maydick auditioned and was selected to be part of this group of more than 140 high school students from Berks, Carbon, Schuylkill, Lehigh, Monroe, Pike and Northampton counties. The guest conductor for the concert was Dr. Andrew Yozviak, director of bands at West Chester University.

The 2019 Rockne Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held Jan. 26 in Rockne Hall. Inductees included Katie Corcoran, Laurie Corcoran, Andy Stephens, Ray Straccia and the 2007 and 2008 State Champions girls volleyball teams.

The Science Olympiad Team placed fifth at the North Pocono Science Olympiad Invitational Jan. 26. Central won seven medals: anatomy and physiology, third place, Pamela Gonzalez and Jack Mallon; Boomilever, third place, Alan Garger and Cooper Mello; Disease Detectives, first place, Priyanka Bhashyam and Michael Fleck; Fermi Questions, fifth place, Talex Li and Alvin Zhu; protein modeling, fourth place, Alan Garger, Gwen Minogue and Elizabeth Ulicny; sounds of music, first place, Michael Fleck and Ryan Schanta; and Thermodynamics, second place, Kevin Ni and Ryan Schanta.

Catholic Schools Week, a weeklong celebration of Catholic schools established by the National Catholic Education Association in 1974, was held Jan. 27 through Feb. 1. This year’s theme was “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Central Catholic celebrated this week with different themed days and visits to Diocesan grade schools. Monday was College Shirt Day; students were off school Tuesday and Wednesday due to the weather; Thursday was Sports Team Day and Friday was Class Color Day, Student and Teacher Appreciation Day and included a pep rally.

Viking Mentors, a group of students who serve as ambassadors to new students and families, visited many partner schools as part of the “Vikings on the Road” program, including St. John Vianney to participate in a school-wide Zumba class.

The Vikette basketball team held their senior night Jan. 31 during their game against Nazareth. Recognized seniors included Jess Davis, Emily Kidd and Lizzy Szmigiel.
