Semifinals set in District 11 team wrestling

The opening rounds of the District 11 team championships took place on Thursday without a lot of surprises.

In the 3A competition, the biggest “upset” was 5-seed Nazareth making it through to the semifinals. Along the way they beat 12-seed Whitehall 65-6 and then knocked off 4-seed Stroudsburg 57-12.

That sets up the Eagles third meeting with Liberty in just two weeks. The Hurricanes are the top seed after beating Nazareth in the EPC finals last week. Liberty handled Emmaus 64-7 to advance after the Hornets beat 8-seed Freedom 31-25 in the pigtail round.

At the bottom of the bracket, as expected, it will be Bethlehem Catholic and Northampton. The Hawks are the 2-seed and narrowly beat NHS earlier this season. Becahi beat 7-seed Easton 57-12 after the Rovers topped 10-seed Parkland 43-18 in the pigtail round.

Meanwhile, the Kids took down 6-seed Pottsville 72-6 after Pottsville took care of 11-seed Blue Mountain 56-19 in the opening round.

In 2A, again the biggest upset was 5-seed Lehighton making it through to the semifinals. The Indians beat 12-seed Pine Grove in a pigtail match 29-27 and then knocked off Mahanoy Area 37-33. The gives them a date with top-seed, and seven-straight Colonial League champ, Saucon Valley.

The Panthers beat Jim Thorpe 63-15 to advance after the Olympians topped Catasauqua 48-27 to move on.

At the bottom of the bracket, it’s 2-seed Notre Dame Green Pond and Wilson in the other semifinal. The Crusaders beat 10-seed Northwestern 54-18 after the Tigers beat Tamaqua 40-28 in the opening round. The Warriors were 54-27 winners over 6-seed North Schuylkill after they beat 11-seed Tri-Valley 43-33 in the opening round.
