The Whitehall wrestling team keeps building toward the postseason, and their recent performance at the Lehighton Indian Duals was another strong step in that direction.

They were among eight teams participating in the dual meet held Jan. 12 at Lehighton High School. The Zephyrs went undefeated, finishing 5-0 for the best record among the competitors which included William Allen, Central Bucks South, East Stroudsburg North, Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley, Scranton and host Lehighton.

They defeated Central Bucks South 66-11, East Stroudsburg North 57-18, Lehighton 48-27, Scranton 45-24, and Jim Thorpe 49-24.

In those five matches, Kai Clark (152) went 4-1 with four pins. His only loss was an 8-6 decision 8-6 against Lehighton’s Logan Pagotto.

Wilfred Jimenez (103) was 3-0 with a fall and two decisions, while Tyler Cunningham was 3-0 with three pins in matches not decided by forfeits.

Johnny Colon was 2-0 in the matches he wrestled, registering two falls, while Josh Grol was 3-1 in his time on the mat, recording two pins and a major decision to help the Zephyrs stay unblemished during the Duals.

Sean Cunningham also had a strong showing at the Indian Duals, finishing 3-1 with two falls and a decision in matches where he wrestled.

Izak Bright (220) was 3-2 with three pins, while Xavier Arner finished 3-1 in the matches he wrestled, registering a fall against Jim Thorpe’s Austin Givens in 0:11.

With those five wins, the Zephyrs hit the 10-win plateau.

“The team wrestled well to win the Indian Duals; it was a total team effort,” said head coach Tim Cunningham.

After that trip up north, they settled back into their conference schedule where they wrestled two of the best teams in the state. First was Stroudsburg who was ranked No. 9, according to Cunningham. They have been a true force the last few years, something Whitehall experienced last year as the Mounties deafened them in the regular season and in the District 11 Team Duals Tournament.

Once again, the denizens from the B Division of the EPC proved tough, winning 51-11.

Tyler Cunningham got Whitehall on the board with a fall over Mark Ortiz in 5:20 at 113. At 126, Xavier Arner defeated Jeffrey Pasciak, 10-3, while Izak Bright decisioned Jullian Sparks, 3-1.

That meet was followed by a bout with the Golden Hawks who are always vying for a state team title, and this year is no different. Whitehall lost to the Hawks, 62-3.

Tyler Cunningham secured the lone victory with a 10-4 victory over Trey Miletics.

“We look forward to wrestling the best teams in the state and country to see where some of our guys stand.” said Cunningham. “Our guys are starting to understand that it is all about scoring points and wrestling as hard as you can no matter who you wrestle.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us before the post season starts, but are looking forward to watching these guys progress and wrestle competitively in districts.”
