LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN

The Emmaus High School Orchestra will host a coffeehouse 7 p.m. Jan. 18 in the cafeteria. A wide variety of musical entertainment will be provided by the students. Coffee, hot chocolate and desserts will be available for purchase. There is a cover charge. All proceeds benefit the orchestra department.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6 to discuss “The Ninth Hour” by Alice McDermott. The book for March is “Moloka’i” by Alan Brennert.

In preparation for the final phase of construction, the library will be closed Jan. 21 and will re-open Feb. 18. There will be no programming or access to the collection during this time. Checkout limits have been increased and checked out items cannot be returned during the closure.

The Friends of the Library will hold its next meeting 10 a.m. Jan. 19 at the library. New officer elections will be held; all current members are encouraged to attend.

Due to library construction, donations for the spring book sale will not be accepted until March 4. Please hold your donations until then.

AARP Taxaide counselors offer free tax help for taxpayers with low to moderate income with special attention to those 60 years and older. Before tax season begins, AARP will be at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center to schedule appointment days during tax season. Appointment scheduling days will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 and 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 1. Starting Feb. 7 through April 11, counselors will be available 1-5 p.m. each Thursday to provide assistance with taxes. Appointment slots fill quickly.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will have a registration day open house to enroll students for the 2019-2020 school year 9:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 21. The staff will be giving tours and accepting registration for the 2019-20 school year. For more information, call 610-965-3265.

The Lower Macungie Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at the community center.

The Ancient Oaks Women’s Organization will hold its next meeting 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s UCC in Trexlertown. They will be making greeting cards.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Holiday House Decorating Contest: first place, 6850 Linden Circle; second place, 1447 Laurel Lane; third place, 7347 Hillcrest Drive.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Feb. 5 and 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The community center offers a number of activities. Classes include organization, fiction writing, card making classes, community meal prep, belly dance, Latin partner dance, ballroom dance, Tai Chi, Zumba and Pilates. Children’s activities include safe sitter class, video game animation, Toddlers and Tutus, Kindermusik, robotics and soccer. For more information, contact the community center at 610-966-6924.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site winter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, The center is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off.
