District 11 Spirit Championships take place

Bethlehem Catholic’s cheerleaders won the Small Division and Liberty’s cheerleaders won the Medium Division at the District XI Competitive Spirit Championships on Jan. 5 at Easton Area Middle School.

The Hawks had the highest overall score with 85.400. They were also the only squad that received no deductions.

Stroudsburg placed second in the Small Division with a score of 79.600. Pocono Mountain East was third with 75.083, Wilson was fourth with 70.933, Southern Lehigh was fifth with 68.183, and Pen Argyl was sixth with 67.800.

These squads will compete at the PIAA State Cheerleading Championships on Jan. 11 and Jan. 12 at the Hershey Giant Arena.

Liberty’s score was 65.000 and the Hurricanes, along with Pleasant Valley with a score of 60.083, will also compete at states on Jan. 11 and Jan. 12.

Nazareth won in the Large Division with a score of 67.583, and East Stroudsburg South won the Coed Division with a score of 63.333.

Squads were judged on presentation, motions, skills, and execution during the cheer portion of the routine, and partner stunts, pyramids, and tumbling during the music portion of the routine.

Deductions were taken for falls, bobbles, out of bounds, unsportsmanlike conduct, excessive celebration, time limit violations, and safety violations.

Becahi, Liberty, Nazareth, and East Stroudsburg South were awarded gold medals after the competition.

Northampton finished 11th among the small school teams.
