NORTH WHITEHALL: Union Lutheran kids buy chicks and piglets

Children at Union Lutheran Sunday School are collecting pennies as their contribution to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America World Hunger program.

They showed up at the God’s Work, Our Hands event last fall with piggy banks, pots, coffee cans and plastic bags all filled with pennies.

At that time, the group had amassed $120 for the ELCA World Hunger piglet campaign.

The amount enabled needy families to receive piglets.

Then, the Sunday School children volunteered to collect pennies all through the year to provide chickens for hungry families around the world.

The chicks can make a big difference for a disadvantaged family by providing eggs for eating and for hatching additional chickens as time goes on for a continuing food supply.

A $10 donation will purchase 10 little chicks.

Church office administrator Donna Remaly commented on the penny collection, which has already paid for six piglets.

“The Sunday School is so excited to be doing that,” Remaly said.

“They changed from piglets to chicks.

“Miraculously the pennies are collecting fast. The children just love it.”
