Guest View - Schlossberg on state hospital demolition

In a perfect world, the Allentown State Hospital buildings would be preserved and re-purposed to create jobs and grow our economy, but we have to face the facts.

Taxpayers are paying millions of dollars every year to keep the buildings from falling down, and no private investors want to buy them. The only answer is the one the state came up with – demolition.

Now, it’s on us to make sure history is preserved, while we move our area forward safely. I’m ready to work with state and local officials to make sure these buildings are taken down safely, with the main concern being the people who live near the buildings.

Beyond that, we will make sure Community Services for Children can keep doing their great work, and, of course, we’ll do everything we can to ensure this site is redeveloped responsibly and enhances the quality of life for the surrounding neighborhood.

Right now, aside from the removal of the buildings from the property, the future uses of the property are unknown.

When I know, my constituents will know. Until then, I’ll answer every question I can.
