Bethlehem Palette Club holds 2018 Juried Exhibit

There are 46 pieces by 32 members of the Bethlehem Palette Club in the 2018 Juried Exhibit, with a closing reception 1:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 3, Rotunda Gallery, City Hall, Bethlehem.

“We have three exhibitions a year,” said President Diane Hutchinson, “Two are juried. One we call our ‘All Member Show,’ which means anybody can put in a piece and it is not juried for entry.” She added, “It is still juried for prizes.”

The Bethlehem Palette Club was founded in 1947 by nine artists. In recent years, the club has grown to 150 members. “We are finally designated as a 501(c)(3),” Hutchinson said. “We can now take contributions from corporations and individuals and they can write it off.”

Deb Hamburger, a non-club member, was juror for the 2018 Juried Exhibit. “I’m looking at composition. I’m looking at technique. Then I go to the elements of the principles of art like contrast and value, and rhythm,” said Hamburger, a printmaker and former Allentown School District art teacher. When deciding on awarding prizes, she said she asks herself, “Is it something unusual, too?”

Chosen for cash awards were: Deborah Walkowiak, First Place, “Industrial Geometry” (acrylic); Phyllis Salveson-Wright, Second Place, “John” (charcoal); Jacqueline Meyerson, Third Place, “Turn Me On” (pastel); Joan Muretta, Fourth Place, “Jonathan” (pastel); Erin Pryor Gill, Fifth Place, “James, By the Window” (oil); Diane Horoschock, Sixth Place, “Beautiful Stranger” (pastel), and Elena Shackleton, Seventh Place, “German School House” (watercolor).

Honorable mentions were awarded to Mary Millan Klunk, “Sea Isle Sunset” (acrylic) and Karen Piznak, “Peppers Awash” (watercolor-froissage).
