State Police Troop L, Hamburg, say a green Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the rear of a white Volvo tractor-trailer 9:15 a.m. Dec. 28 on I-78, Greenwich Township.
According to police, the Freightliner was westbound on I-78 in the right lane. The Volvo tractor-trailer was partially disabled on the shoulder and right lane between the Lenhartsville and Kutztown exits.
As the driver of the Freightliner came around the curve, he saw the Volvo rig traveling slow, and attempted to swerve out of the right lane, but struck its rear.
The Freightliner then traveled across both westbound lanes and struck the center concrete barrier, before rolling onto its passenger side and sliding west, blocking the westbound lanes.
Police say a red Volvo tractor-trailer was also in the right lane behind the Freightliner and white Volvo tractor-trailer, when the driver saw the Freightliner sliding and blocking the roadway.
The driver of a red tractor-trailer attempted to miss both tractor-trailer combos and moved into the left lane, but failed to see a black Volvo sedan in the left lane.
The red Volvo’s trailer struck the sedan and pushed it into the center concrete barrier, before coming to a stop against the wall and pinning the sedan.
No injured were reported.
The westbound lanes of I-78 were closed for approximately three hours, police say.
Kutztown, Virginville, Kempton firefighters, along with Hamburg EMS, V&M Towing and PennDOT assisted at the scene and with cleanup.
