NAHS library receives book written by Class of 2001 graduate

A book written by a Northampton Area High School graduate has been donated to the high school library.

“To Master the Boundless Sea: The U.S. Navy, the Marine Environment, and the Cartography of Empire” (2018, University of North Carolina Press) by Jason W. Smith is a nonfiction book about the rise of the U.S. Navy and the emergence of America as a sea power.

Smith, a NAHS Class of 2001 graduate, is an assistant professor of history at Southern Connecticut State University.

Ronald Smith, retired teacher in the Northampton Area School District where he taught 35 years, presented a copy of his son’s book to NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik.

“We wanted to emphasize the quality education that he got here,” said Smith, on behalf of his son, who could not attend the Sept. 24, 2018, school board meeting when the presentation was made.

In other business at the Sept. 24, 2018, meeting, the school board voted 9-0 to approve, at the recommendation of the administration:

Ryan Leitch, long-term substitute math teacher, Northampton Area Middle School, second semester, 2018-19 school year, at $278.48 per diem

Elizabeth Kish, short-term substitute kindergarten teacher, George Wolf Elementary School, Nov. 2, 2018, through March 15, at $150 per diem, no benefits

Tina Vozzo, 1:1 instructional assistant, NAHS, effective Oct. 9, 2018, at $12.59 per hour

Nicole Pryce, instructional assistant, NAHS, effective Oct. 1, 2018, at $14.95 per hour

Megan Gogal, special education instructional assistant, Lehigh Elementary School, effective Oct. 9, 2018, at $12.59 per hour

Contracts for Erika Condomitti and Anna Gocek to provide homebound instruction for an NASD student at a cost not to exceed $19,000

Lloyd Graff, hall monitor, NAHS, effective Sept. 25, 2018, at $12.59 per hour

Behavioral support services for students with special needs not to exceed $38,784.60, paid for by Pennsylvania Department Of Education Access Program funds

Special education services for students with special needs provided by Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 not to exceed $5,500, included in 2018-19 budget

Matthew Sawarynski and Jason Williamson to attend the annual Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials conference, March 5-8, Hershey, at a cost of $2,000

Donna Teklits to attend the annual Pennsylvania Association of School Personnel Administrators conference, Feb. 27 and 28 and March 1, Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey, at a district cost of $788.50

Christina and Gene Thrash to plan, coordinate and offer student education first educational tour for 20 students to England, Scotland and Ireland in summer 2020, at no cost to the district

Three-year contract with Environmental Abatement Associates Inc., Kingston, to provide testing and monitoring for asbestos in district buildings in compliance with Asbestos Hazards Emergency Response Act, May through April 2022, with 0-percent increase as follows: semiannual surveillance, five times at $720 each for $3,600; one-time reinspection, $1,440; additional air-monitoring and project management, $75 per hour, if required; and other services, if required, $60 per hour, plus lab costs and equipment fees

Five-year service agreements with Eastern Time of Allentown for service and inspections of fire alarm systems at Franklin Elementary School and Washington building, Nov. 1, 2018, through Oct. 31, 2023, at an initial rate of $356 per year for Franklin Elementary School and $356 for Washington building for a total of $712, with a 1.75-percent increase each consecutive year

BerkOne Inc., Bethlehem, to prepare and mail Homestead applications on behalf of NASD in accordance with Act 72 of 2004 and Act 1 of 2006 at $0.3383 each
