BJordan Kamp’s redshirt sophomore season got off to a solid start in goal for the St. John’s women’s soccer team. She saw time between the pipes in each of the Red Storm’s two preseason games and started against nationally-ranked Tennessee in the season opener.

But two games later, Kamp suffered a thumb injury in pregame workouts against Syracuse in late August. She played in just four games (two starts) the rest of the way before her season was shut down in late September.

“Personally, my season was more about growth off the field than on the field,” Kamp said. “I jammed my thumb but tried to play through it most of the season because I did not want to miss any more games. However, my injury began to affect daily life activities and after further imaging, I learned I had sustained tears to my RCL and UCL in my right thumb. I was advised to stop playing for the rest of the season in order to avoid surgery.”

Kamp still might require surgery on that thumb. She will find out later this week as she continues to recover from that unfortunate setback over three months ago.

Still, being sidelined has driven Kamp to work harder this offseason to get back to where she was entering this fall season for the Johnnies (9-9-1 overall; 5-3-1 in Big East). She allowed seven goals in her five games of action and picked up a win against Stony Brook.

“At the end of the day my team’s success is more important than my own, and I was grateful to continue to show my support in whatever way I could,” Kamp said. “I am super grateful for the minutes I received this season and am looking forward to earning more opportunities on the field in the future.”

Coming off a solid season redshirt freshman season in which Kamp played in 14 games and allowed just 0.95 goals per match, the former Falcon was slotted in to likely see significant time once again in 2018. She finished 7-6-1 last season with four shutouts credited to her name.

But that unfortunate injury put Kamp on the sidelines just as she started finding her groove at the collegiate level.

“I had really big shoes to fill once Diana Poulin graduated, which would be intimidating for anyone for obvious reasons,” Kamp said. “The upperclassmen, along with the coaching staff, allowed me to grow into my new role throughout the season and trusted that I could establish myself within that role and be successful for the team.

“We had an awesome leadership committee that truly represented what our program stands for: sacrifice, commitment, and love for the game. Our goal was to win the Big East Championship, and although we came up short, we learned a lot about what it means to be a cohesive team and have mutual respect and support for one another on and off the field.”

St. John’s season came to an end against Providence in the firs round of the Big East Tournament. While Kamp couldn’t be a part of that, she hopes to play a bigger role come next fall.

“I am extremely excited to hopefully get back on the field sooner rather than later, so I can make more of an impact in training, as well as readjust to the pace of the college game,” Kamp said. “Seeing lots of repetitions is also important in developing my consistency in certain aspects of my game.”

Kamp plans to major in government and politics with a minor in economics. She then would like to obtain her master’s degree in public administration with a minor in American government.
