Stephens Funeral Home sponsors Veterans Day celebration

Stephens Funeral Home, Upper Macungie Township, sponsored a Veterans Day event Nov. 11 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the armistice signed at the end of World War I.

The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast, which promotes patriotism and maintains tradition for civilian and military communities in 13 states, entertained the guests.

American Legion Post 576, Allentown, posted the colors.

The Rev. Richard Stough, retired Lutheran pastor and U.S. Navy veteran, shared his experiences as a chaplain serving in the Philadelphia Naval Hospital during the Vietnam War.

Retired Chief Petty Officer Mathias Gutman, 93, discussed his experiences as a young sailor serving in the Pacific during World War II.

Gutman served as a coxswain on landing craft, ferrying Marines and soldiers to beach heads in several key island invasions during his tour.

He was a recipient of the Navy Commendation Medal for his role on board a mine sweeper following the Japanese surrender to clear Japanese harbors of pressure mines dropped by U.S. aircraft during the war.
