Nevie, Lehigh County’s bomb-sniffing K-9, signaled to her handler, Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Garner, at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3 she had found a suspicious package at the Government Center during her daily mail inspection.

The Sheriff’s Office obtained Nevie, a German Shepherd, last year.

Born Sept. 11, 2014, Nevie was named “Never Again,” in memory of the attacks on 9/11.

She was provided to the sheriff’s office by Progressive K-9 Academy, Walnutport.

Nevie is trained in all aspects of explosive detection as well as human scent tracking.

According to information provided by the county, the package was quickly quarantined, and local emergency services were contacted.

“The Allentown Bomb Squad, working in conjunction with Lehigh County Sheriff Joe Hanna and additional county personnel, managed the situation throughout the investigation,” Joshua Siegel, Lehigh County public information officer, wrote via email.

Additional information and inspection determined a staffer from Northampton County and hunter had prepared the package and transferred small traces of gunpowder residue.

Offices with windows near the package in the Government Center were evacuated.

“I have to commend both our county and Allentown city personnel for their response time, exemplary management of the incident and their high-degree of training and proficiency,” County Executive Phillips Armstrong said. “The Lehigh County’s Sheriff’s Department, dog handler Rich Gardner, and the Allentown City Bomb Squad were instrumental in resolving this situation and provided us with a peace of mind and sense of security that cannot be overstated.

“I and everyone in Lehigh County are forever grateful for the sacrifices and risks they take, and are fortunate to have these professional to keep us safe.”

According to Siegel, the package was given to the Lehigh County Board of Elections.
