LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Q. Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.

A. My mother Tina Foley, my father David Bowler, my stepfather Daniel McGonigle, my brother Ian Bowler, my cat Tiggy and my kitten Waffles.

Q. What do you most enjoy about being a senior?

A. As a senior at Emmaus High School, I have had three previous years to get to know the ins and outs of the building as well as most of the faculty. Emmaus feels more like a community than the labyrinth filled with thousands of unknown faces that it was freshman year. Now when I walk through the halls, I can greet most of the teachers and I rarely go down a hallway without seeing a familiar face.

Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?

A. Math has always been my favorite subject. I am a logical thinker and do well with numbers. I am now in Multivariate Calculus with Mr. Burkhardt and I am learning all sorts of hidden relationships that are interesting to rediscover.

Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A. Freshman year I made it to the state level in both Science Fair and History Day. The robotics team and I have made it to the state championships the past two years.

Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?

A. I am president of the robotics team for the second year. I am treasurer for the American Computer Science League club. I have participated in PA Math League for four years. I am in Model UN and National Honor Society. I have also worked at Smashburger for almost a year and a half.

Q. What is your next goal after high school?

A. I plan to go to college to major in mechanical engineering and find a job in the field.

Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?

A. My height at 6 feet 6 inches has always come with its pros and cons. While, yes, I can reach almost anything, there are many things not built for my height. The stairwell in the back of the English hallway with the “low ceiling warnings” is actually a hazard for me. I have hit my head on many things and one time even got a concussion from banging my head on a low ceiling. Since then I have learned to be extra vigilant wherever I go but I think I will always have to be careful.

Q. For what would you like to be remembered?

A. I would like to be remembered in the same way as Isaac Newton and Steve Jobs are, for creating something that will forever benefit the people of the future. I want to discover breakthroughs in the field of engineering. Maybe even make flying cars possible. There are so many problems that need to be solved and I want to be remembered for solving a big one.

Q. Whom do you admire? Why?

A. I admire Elon Musk. He is living my dream of making great things that benefit humanity. He is going to space, building electric vehicles and making technologies of which we have only ever dreamed.

Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?

A. If you have enough drive and initiative, you can achieve anything you want to accomplish, do not let anything get in your way.
