LOWER MACUNGIE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Lower Macungie Middle School Theatre will present the comedy ‘The Not So Grand Hotel’ 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 17 in the LMMS auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The play, written by Eddie Cope and Carl L. Williams, will be performed by a cast and crew of 52 students. Director Patrick Campbell describes this farce as a “light, fun, family friendly play with endearing characters.”
This is the 20th year LMMS Theatre, directed by Campbell, is delighting and entertaining audiences with acting talent, music and comedy.
The scene is set in the south, in the middle of nowhere, in a dilapidated hotel owned by Widow Boggs. Business has been slow. Due to a mudslide blocking the main road, the hotel is suddenly receiving guests after travelers are detoured right by the hotel.
The hotel is back in business as an eccentric British world traveler, a police fugitive and a math teacher with two high school students find their way in even though the front entrance is still blocked by the last landslide.
The fun begins as the hotel staff finds themselves amid chaos and madness with the new guests.
Mason Steltz plays Peter; the hotel bellhop, a character he describes as determined yet conflicted between fulfilling a dream as a hotel manager in New York or staying at the Hotel Horace among people he knows. Stelts, who has acted in plays since the second grade, loves theatre. He said he is enjoying portraying his character’s variety of emotions in different scenes, his crush on Nita and how he builds relationships with the staff and guests at the hotel.
“The show is really funny with secret hidden jokes and funny interesting personalities,” Steltz said.
Maeye Yans is one of two stage managers with duties that include record blocking notes and helping backstage with props and set change cues. “I love the show. It’s so funny. The cast does a great job. This show has great actors. I think the audience will really enjoy the show,” Yans said. She really enjoyed having the chance to fill in reading lines and experiencing different character roles.
Hailey Reinhard has the part of Nita, niece of Widow Boggs, the hotel owner.
Reinhard describes her character as delicate and sensitive, full of emotions. Acting since first grade, Reinhard said the challenge for her in this role was learning a southern accent. She accomplished this with tips from Campbell and watching videos.
“The show is hilarious, very funny with jokes, drama and interaction with the various personalities,” Reinhard said. She admits the romantic scenes are awkward for cast members.
Having a sister that performed in plays has really helped her with her acting skills, Rienhard said.
Crew member Amber Emery works in the technical booth with stage lighting. She is having fun with this new experience since this is her first year in theater.
She credits fellow crew and cast members for helping her learn lighting.
Theater has been a positive experience for Emery and helped her learn how to manage her time wisely. She admits theater is a lot more chaotic and faster paced than she realized so her advice to those interested in trying theater is to learn time management. She describes theater as fun and suggests coming to see and experience the show.
