The Whitehall girls soccer team’s season came to an end at the 9:39 mark of the second overtime in their District 11 semifinal game against Easton.

The second-seeded Zephyrs and third-seeded Red Rovers had been locked in a scoreless battle for over 100 minutes of playing time before Easton was finally able to break through following back-to-back corners.

Whitehall had beaten Easton 2-1 during the regular season and had outplayed Easton for most of the playoff game.

During regulation, the Zephyrs outshot the Rovers 9-5 and also led in corners, 4-1.

Even in overtime, the first two quality scoring chances belonged to the team in maroon and gold.

At the eight-minute mark of the first OT, the Easton keeper made a sprawling save by just getting a hand on a shot that seemed destined for the far side of the net. One minute into the second overtime, EPC MVP Kate Bonshak’s shot from the left side of the field got past the keeper but rolled just wide of the far post.

The loss not only knocked the Zephyrs out of the District `` playoffs but left them one game short of qualifying for the PIAA state playoffs as well.

Head coach Chris Bleam shared his thoughts and the game and season.

“I thought we played well tonight,” he said. “We had the ball in the attacking end for much of the game and we just didn’t put away a chance.

I’m proud of our kids. There’s not much more they could have done. It’s a cruel game sometimes. Their goal was to play two more games, at least two, and we didn’t reach that tonight. They’re disappointed but at the end of the day they’ll sit back and reflect on a really good season.”
